Funeral service for Leo A. Allmendinger age 91 of Selby, SD be Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 2:00 PM at UCC Church in Selby, SD. Interment will be in Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, the church in Selby. Leo passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in Selby.
A fun, loving man was called home to rest June 22, 2017 at the age of 91. Leo Albert Allmendinger was born at the family farm to Albert and Margaret (Roesch) Allmendinger. He grew up on the family farm at Selby and attended McKinley School, a one room school house, through the eighth grade. He worked on the farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1945 and served as chief postal clerk in the Base Post Office on the Fiji Islands. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 and after his return to the United States, he took over the family farm.
On October 30, 1949, he married Genevieve Biel. They lived in Aberdeen, SD until March of 1950 when they moved to the farm at Selby and made that their permanent residence. He grew oats, barley, wheat, and rye along with raising cows and pigs.
Leo was a life-time member of the American Legion and a charter member of the Selby Jaycees where he received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award and the Distinguished Service Award. He served as Supervisor of the Walworth County Soil Conservation District and was a member of the Walworth County Livestock Improvement Association and the Wheat Growers Association. Leo and Genny were members of the Saddle Club and rode in the grand entry of the Mobridge Stampede Rodeo carrying the flags.
The Farm Credit System was an important part of his life. In 1957, he became a Director of the Federal Land Bank Association of Mobridge, SD and in 1968 he was elected the Director of the Farm Credit Banks of Omaha where he served until 1986. He was also elected Director of the Farm Credit System Capital Corporation based in Kansas City, KS and the Farm Bank Services based in Denver, CO and served these organizations until 1987. Leo was a member of the United Church of Christ of Selby and held offices on the Church Council. He enjoyed singing and started singing with the church choir at the age of 14. He was a member of the J.C. Quartet which sang for many events throughout the community. He was a member of the Selby Men's Chorus. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed camping, wood working and playing cards. Leo and Genny were charter members of the Weekend Loafers Camping Club. After his retirement, they enjoyed the 26 years they spent at their winter home in Mesa, AZ.
Survivors include: one son, Steve (Lila) of Selby, three daughters Cyndi Baumann of Omaha, NE, Mary (Glenn) Parry of Beloit, WI, Paula (Bob) Scicluna, Raleigh, NC, nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genny, his parents, his sisters, Alma Diedtrich and Esther Kelly, his brothers, Raymond and Albert, son-in-law, Floyd Baumann Jr., and daughter-in-law, Jill Allmendinger.
Leo was known for his sense of humor and his kind, patient and positive outlook on life. He would remind his children that the person in the mirror decides what kind of day you are going to have.
