Obituary

Funeral services for Lena Speker, age 99, of Lantry will be at 10 AM, Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the UCC Church in Eagle Butte. Burial will be in the Lantry Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service will be at 7 PM Tuesday at the church. Lena Fern (Stambach) Speker passed away peacefully August 2, 2012 at GLC-Meadowbrook in Rapid City, SD.

Lena was born August 8, 1912 at Frankfort, SD. Lena was the ninth child of 12 children born to Fredrick and Suria (Danner) Stambach. Lena married Milton (Butch) Speker on December 31, 1931 at Dupree, SD.

Lena was a farm wife, working alongside her husband. She was also a custodian at the Lantry School for 11 years and gathered news for the "Lantry Locals" from 1985 until November 2010. Lena was Farm Wife of the Week in Aberdeen Farm Forum in 1967. She was a charter member in the Willing Workers Extension Club. She was also Grand Lady of the Ziebach County Extension Club. She was past Nobel Grand of Rebecca Lodge. She was a member of the UCC Church in Eagle Butte, Mary Circle, and the Senior Center in Dupree. Lena and her husband Milton were King and Queen of the Sweetheart Ball at the Nutrition Center in Eagle Butte, SD in 1985.

In past years Lena enjoyed going to farm meetings, gathering eggs, and feeding the chickens. She did her own yard work and had a yard full of pretty flowers and trees. In recent years Lena enjoyed listening to taped books, going to the Senior Center in Dupree, and calling neighbors to get news for the local paper. She loved singing songs, reciting poems and especially playing bingo. She enjoyed her family immensely, seeing her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren often.

Lena is survived by one sister, Peggy of Alliance, NE; her children, Claudette (Gerald) Stapert of Lantry, SD, Claude Speker of Dupree, SD, and Karen (Gerry) Boehrs of Rapid City, SD, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; one son, Gary Speker; her parents; three brothers; and seven sisters.
