Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence "Larry" Senftner, 85, Mobridge will be Monday 10 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mobridge. A prayer service will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 PM at the Church. Visitation Sunday, 2-5 PM at the funeral home and at the church at 6:30 PM. Burial Tuesday 2 PM MDT, Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge. Larry passed away August 3, 2010 in Mobridge.
Lawrence L Senftner, son of Michael and Elizabeth (Laber) Senftner was born December 31, 1924 in Campbell County South Dakota. He graduated from Herreid high school; he loved music and played with the Jundt brothers dance band. He was sent into the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After his return, he married Alpha Dupper April 7, 1947. The couple moved to Sturgis where he worked for the F. O. Jolley Funeral Home and the V. A. Medical center. In 1952 they moved back to Campbell county where they farmed, ranched, and raised five children. He worked in the community with 4-H clubs and chaperoned high school students on special trips; his sons participated in dance bands, his daughters in high school band, he loved to sell tickets and mingle with the young adults. Larry had a charismatic fun loving personality that drew many friends of all ages into his life. Larry never knew a stranger. He worked with the military draft board, school board and soil conservation board; he was also a county commissioner.
He had a private butcher shop at his farm; affectionately called the L&L butcher shop, that provided for many joyous family gatherings; Larry's wife Alpha passed away on Sept. 29, 2001. He met, his present wife Monica Olson at a dance in 2002 and they were married in 2004. They resided in Mobridge, which allowed him to make frequent visits to his Campbell county farm.
He maintained a strong Christian faith and especially enjoyed his weekly bible study prayer group. Larry was a wonderful, loving individual and will certainly be missed by family and friends.
He is survived by wife Monica of Mobridge, his children, Dean of Mound City, Dan (Debra) Senftner of Rapid City SD, Denis (Terri) Senftner of Lacey, WA., Donna (Doug) Klimas of Colorado Springs, CO; step sons Doug (Jill) Olson of Lemmon, Todd (Kathi) Olson of Watauga, 8 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, his siblings Agnes (Bob) Bonin of Glendale, AZ., Stella Farrell of Burbank, CA., James (Gloria) Senftner of Roseville, CA., and Richard (Donna) Senftner of Herreid, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alpha, his brother Raymond, his sisters Frances and Matilda, and his daughter Diane Callahan.
