Obituary
LaVerne "Babe" Gage, 68, of Eagle Butte, SD passed away Friday, June 01, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre, SD.
LaVerne was born October 1, 1943 in Eagle Butte, SD to Glen Joens and Alvena Blattner Joens . She graduated from Eagle Butte High School in 1961 then attended Greens Beauty School in Rapid City earning her beautician certificate. She was employed at Veras Beauty Shop in Eagle Butte from 1962-1963 then tried her hand at waitressing and washing dishes at Stabbes Café till 1965.
LaVerne married Leo Gage in 1965 and resided in Eagle Butte for four years before briefly moving to Mobridge then settling down in Black Hawk, SD in 1969 where they lived for the next 23 years. She returned to Eagle in 1992, after the passing of her husband.
LaVerne, known to many as "Babe" enjoyed crocheting, reading and collecting the "Longarm" western book series, creating delicious baked goods for family, friends or neighbors, whipping up the best potato and pea salad for family gatherings to go along with some of her favorite food, chicken wings and burned hot dogs. Babe always kept up on family news or local happenings and enjoyed reporting on them with her opinion sprinkled in. She appreciated good basketball and loved watching the Chicago Bulls or Boston Celtics play. Occasionally Babe would volunteer her time to assist with community oriented activities such as local blood drives, help with voter registration at voting precincts, and serving as secretary/treasurer for the North 212 Association.
She is survived by her seven brothers and two sisters, Boyd (Coral) Joens of Henry , SD, Leslie (Ethel) Joens of Eagle Butte, SD, Ben (Henrietta/Hank) Joens of Eagle Butte, SD, Ronald (Judy) Joens of Black Hawk, SD, Golda Galyen of Rapid City, SD, Gwendolyn (Dave) Vogt of Black Hawk, SD, Kenneth (Deb) Joens of Eagle Butte, SD, Larry (Rene' Bourn) Joens of Eagle Butte, SD, Mickey (Jenny) Joens, Eagle Butte, SD, three aunts, Hazel Hefferman, Sturgis, SD, Edna Strong, Spearfish, SD, and Otha Joens, Mobridge, SD along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Gage, parents Glen and Alvena Joens, grandparents, a niece and brother in-in-law Lennie Galyen.
Immediate family will be holding a private celebration of life memorial, per Laverne's wishes. Interment will be in the Eagle Butte Cemetery. Kesling funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
