Mass of Christian Burial for Laurence "Pinky" Hollenbeck, age 79 of Promise will be Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mobridge. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 PM at the church with a rosary starting at 7PM Tuesday. Laurence at passed away, Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Laurence "Pinky" Hollenbeck was born January 18, 1934, in rural Glenham to Clay and Dorothy Hollenbeck. The Hollenbeck family moved from the Glenham area in 1933 to the homestead ranch 7 miles northeast of Trail City, on the Snake Creek. He was educated at the Landeau School and attended high school in Mobridge graduating in 1951.
Pinky married Nancy Derrenger on November 20, 1953 and moved to Sioux Falls where he worked as Lead Brand Inspector for the South Dakota Stock Growers Association at the Sioux Falls Stock Yards. The first two daughters were born in Sioux Falls. In the Spring of 1956 Pink and Nancy moved back to the Mobridge area. In 1958 they moved out to the Fitzer / Tony Welder ranch south of Sitting Bull monument, which later became the L.E. Hollenbeck Ranch. The remaining two daughters and three sons were born in Mobridge.
He took great joy in educating his kids in native grass identification and cattle management. Pinky enjoyed supporting local 4H and Little Britches Rodeo clubs. Pinky was well respected as a cattleman with a good eye for stock managment, he improved his cow herd, utilizing production testing and artificial insemination. He also served as a regional ABS representative, selling and promoting high quality genetics and AI equipment. Pinky's Simmental / Red Angus cross cattle were often sought after for replacement Heifers and Bulls.
Pinky was a member of the South Dakota National Guard for a short period in 1950 and 1951.
With a career in brand inspection spanning over 30 years, Pink was well known by most ranchers and cattle producers throughout central SD.
On Sept 8, 1987, after almost 34 years of marriage, Nancy passed away. Pinky remarried on October 30, 1989 to Edwina Mowrer and continued to operate the ranch south of Sitting Bull. In 1998 he re-located to the Mowrer Ranch on the Moreau River. He continued to enjoy ranching, roping and traveling to Rodeos, nurturing grandchildren, and became a member of the Promise community and the St Catherine Church, until his death.
Survivors include his wife Edwina, rural Mobridge; four daughters, DeeAnn Hollenbeck of Hot Springs, Carrie Hollenbeck of Wausau WI, Lori Petersen of Ridgeview, and Sue McDonald of Benson MN; three sons, Jim Hollenbeck of Harrisburg, John Hollenbeck of White Hall AR, and Jed Hollenbeck of Omaha NE; step children include, Jeff Mowrer of Promise, Lori Ward of Timber Lake, Karla Hackett of Fort Thompson, Greg Mowrer of Promise, Kathy Varland of Faith, and Jodi Wooldridge of Hill City; a sister, Edith Sutfin of Tucson AZ, four brothers, Dale of McKlusky, Bob of Trail City, Gordon of Pierre, and Don of Trail City; and 46 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents Clay and Dorothy, two brothers, Bud and Vic, and his wife Nancy.
