Larry Dean Swift was born on March 26, 1961, in Faith, South Dakota, to Larry Ross and Shirley (Venell) Swift. He grew up and attended school in Isabel. When his family moved to Firesteel, Dean then attended school in Timber Lake.

Dean married the love of his life, Keri McCuiston of McIntosh, SD on July 22, 2006. Together they enjoyed raising their two children, Nathaniel James and Tristan Elizabeth.

Dean began trucking for Jerry Zimmerman in 1976 and worked until 1984 when Jerry left the area. He then began working for Gene Bollinger Trucking of Timber Lake. Later on, Dean trucked for East River Lumber of Mobridge. After leaving East River Lumber he then worked for Burress Feeds of Isabel until they closed their business. Dean then purchased his own semi and established L. Swift Trucking. He hauled cattle for several years until he leased on with a company out of Kansas City. After several years of over the road trucking, he decided he would like to be home with his family. In August of 2012, Joe Locken of Locken Oil in Isabel offered to lease his truck for hauling fuel. Dean really enjoyed hauling fuel and was able to be home almost every night. He continued this job until his passing.

Dean is survived by his wife, Keri of Firesteel, son, Nathan James (Summer) of Bismarck, ND, one daughter, Tristan Elizabeth of Firesteel. Brothers, David (Jodi) Swift of Belle Fourche, SD, Donnie (Joni) Swift of Mobridge, SD. Sisters, Debbie (Ronnie) Goldade of Timber Lake, SD and Staci (Jim) Krogstad of Spearfish, SD. Also several nieces and nephews, parents in law, Tim and Beth Johnson of Isabel, SD, brother in law, James McCuiston of Rapid City, SD.
