Kevin Charles Baine (KC) Longbrake was born January 28, 1991 in Eagle Butte, SD to Delbert and Mona (Marcelle) Longbrake. He was raised at the Nordvold Ranch on Abear Creek, south of Eagle Butte, with his sister, Ann'D, and brothers Weston, Jake and Kel. KC's childhood was all about being a cowboy and living the western lifestyle. He was horseback every chance he got and loved helping his dad with the cattle and anything else that needed to be done on the ranch.
On February 4th, 1999, at the age of 8, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He took chemotherapy and radiation treatments for nearly 4 years. During this time, he wasn't supposed to do anything strenuous, but nobody could keep him away from his best buddy "Moe" (his appaloosa horse).
His school days were spent at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte Schools where his outgoing and charming personality made him a favorite among his teachers and classmates. He spent his weekends and summers at his Uncle Tom & Aunt Charlene Traversie, and Bob & Arliss Keckler, where Grandma Arliss would cook him his favorite meal, "roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy."
When KC was a young boy, he traveled the rodeo trail with his Dad who was a rodeo judge nearly every weekend. KC made many friends with the other rodeo kids, and this is where his bond with the White Wolf family became so strong. He adopted Sullivan Sr. as his Lala, and Lillian as his Unci. Huey, Kim and Crissy became his Uncle and Aunties and he would spend whatever time he could with them.
When KC was little he wanted to be just like his big brother Weston, riding steers, then on to junior bulls, but due to his cancer he was limited. After he defeated cancer, he started his rodeo career by traveling with Pat Tibbs and learning to team rope. KC rode his first steer during the 1999 CRST Fair & Rodeo. He also participated in a little bit of basketball and football, but his true love was rodeo. He loved to watch his Uncle Bud Longbrake and Cousin T.C. Holloway ride, which inspired him to ride saddle broncs. KC was involved in high school rodeo. After graduating from high school in 2009, KC attended college at Gillette Community College where he received his Certified Welding Degree, graduating in May 2010. While attending college in Gillette, he was a member of the college rodeo team and traveled all over the Rocky Mountain Region Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. After college, KC moved up to the amateur ranks of rodeo, including the South Dakota Rodeo Association (SDRA), the Northwest Ranch Cowboys Association (NRCA), and the Great Plains Indian Rodeo Association (GPIRA). In 2012, he was the year end Saddle Bronc Riding Champion in both the SDRA and the NRCA. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe honored KC and proclaimed Friday, December 28th, 2012 as KC LONGBRAKE DAY! In 2013, KC bought his PRCA permit and filled it that same year, so in 2014 he was on his rookie year and traveled extensively across the United States riding at all the big pro rodeos. In 2013, he qualified for his first Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada where he finished 6th in the average.
After returning from college KC worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in various positions including being a truck driver. He then worked for Colt and Chason Floyd at "Ace In The Hole" building pole barns. KC also did ranch work for Chris & Emma Lu Reeves and the Moore family ranch near Lower Brule, SD.
KC then worked in the oil fields in North Dakota for a short time. After the loss of his brother Jake in May 2014, KC moved home to be closer to his family and to continue his rodeo career. The highlight of KC's rodeo career was when he won the Saddle Bronc Riding at the Sitting Bull Stampede in Mobridge, SD, last 4th of July, when he rode the famous horse "Chuckulator" for 84 points. The last rodeo KC participated in was at Kallispell, Montana on March 21, 2015.
KC was all about having fun. He always had that big grin and was definitely a charmer; trying to 'hit' on every girl he came in contact with.
KC is survived by his parents, Delbert & Mona Longbrake of Eagle Butte, his sister Ann'D (Jon) of Eagle Butte; brothers, Weston (Jamie) of Coolidge, Arizona, and Kel (Stephanie) of Pierre, SD. His nephews, Lane Longbrake of Belle Fourche, SD, Godson Jayden & Jackson Taken Alive of Eagle Butte, Kelby Longbrake of Pierre, and niece Kessa May Longbrake of Pierre. His grandparents, Pete Longbrake of Dupree, Faye Longbrake of Eagle Butte, and Russell & Mary Garrett of Tucson, Arizona; his Uncles, Jake (Cindy) Longbrake of Dupree, Bud Longbrake of Dupree, and Marty Pavatea of Tucson, Arizona. His aunts Charlie (Harlen) Bradshaw of Kaycee, Wyoming and Monti Pavatea of Browning, Montana. His great uncles Robert and Alan Eagleman of Eagle Butte, Moses Traversie of Mission, Stewart Eagleman of Cumberland, WI, and Turk Cobell of Valier, Montana. His great aunts Carol, Wanda, Eva Cobell of Browning, Montana and Linda Alexander of Dallas, Texas. As well as his extended families including the Longbrake's, Nordvold's, Cobell's, LeBeau's, Traversie's, Keckler's and White Wolf's.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Specialist Jake T. Longbrake, his grandfather Earl Marcelle, great-grandpas Neil Traversie, Joseph Eagleman Sr., and Alvin Cobell. Great grandmas Liberty Cobell and Helmina Traversie. Also his great aunts Eloise Cobell and Leola Kennedy, and great uncle Little Joe Eagleman. Also his best friend Shannon "Tall Horse" Lawrence.
The tears have now changed from one of joy, the laughs we shared with our favorite cowboy.
With every joke he was quick on his feet, if he could make u smile his day was complete.
He loved bucking horses and old cowboy tails, and looking sharp on that ol rodeo trail.
He had lots of friends who before it was too late, wish they could've helped with what burdened his plate.
The old Devils tricks were too strong that day, alone KC Longbrake wasn't able to shake.
Having a hole in your heart only Gods love can fill, I'm sorry friend but God loves you still.
