Obituary
Mass of Christian Burial for Katherine E. Kindel age 92 of Selby will be Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby. Burial will be in Verbort, Or. under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A wake service will be held Sunday at 5:00 PM at the church in Selby. Mrs. Kindel passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby.
Katherine Evelyn Kindel was born May 20, 1922 in Selby, SD the daughter of Andrew and Theresa (Bertha) Raba. She attended grade school at West Spring Valley School south east of Selby. She did housework and worked as a florist in Chicago for a short time. She spent 15 months at a religious community, Servants of Mary, in Wisconsin.
She met her husband Kenneth Julius Kindel through a pen pal service and they were married October 3, 1950 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selby, SD. Following a honeymoon trip from SD back to Oregon, they made their home on the Kindel family farm in Verboort, Oregon. She lost her husband in 1964 and in 1965 moved with her 9 children back to Selby, SD. There they lived with her sister's family on the farm until she bought a home in Selby. She is a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Altar Society, she taught 1st grade CCD and kept the church sparkling for many years. Katherine also worked at the Hilltop Motel for a number of years. In 2009 she moved into the Good Samaritan Center where she lived until her death, November 19, 2014.
Katherine is survived by her 9 children and their spouses: Alicia & Donald Herinckx, Forest Grove, OR; Andrew & Candace Kindel, Eureka, MT; Marvin & Nancy Kindel, Selby, SD; Marianne & Clifford Vandervelden, North Plains, OR; Therese & Daniel Schmidt, Forest Grove, OR; Timothy & Jan Kindel, Hosmer, SD; Jerome & Dixie Kindel, Java, SD; June & Gregory Kolb, Beavertown, OR; Renita & Scott Sauer, Aberdeen, SD; 28 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren, a sister, Irene Kosters, Mobridge, SD and a sister-in-law, Verna Raba, Rapid City, SD.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; a daughter Rose Mary; her parents, Andrew & Theresa Raba, 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
