Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Strongheart, 74, of Wakpala will be at 11 AM CT, Saturday, July 18, 2015 at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Wakpala. Burial will be at the Strongheart Ranch Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A Rosary will be at 7 PM Friday at Kesling Funeral Home. Joseph passed away Saturday, July 11, 2015 at his home.
Joseph Charles Strongheart was born on May 26, 1941 to Walter and Eva (Yellow) Strongheart at home on the Grand River. He has resided along the Grand River all of his life. Joe attended school in Wakpala and graduated there. While in school he was on the basketball team. Following high school he attended college for a year before his father got sick and he had to return home to help. He attended welding school in Cleveland, OH, became a certified welder and he worked on the Mobridge bridge as a welder. Joe met Mildred Sands in Arizona and they were married on June 2, 1972 in Pierre. They made there home on the Strongheart Ranch. A few years later they renewed their vows at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Wakpala.
Joe stayed busy with his ranching operation. He loved working with his cattle and horses. He also enjoyed haying. He would help others with haying if they needed it. Joe enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He served three terms as a council member for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Mildred Strongheart of Wakpala, son, Joseph Strongheart Jr. of Wakpala, daughter, Jolene Strongheart of Wakpala and sister, Edith Smith of Parker, AZ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and 2 sisters.
