Obituary

Memorial Service for John Lester West, 80, of Mobridge will be Friday at 11:00 A.M. at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge. Private family burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Prayer service will be Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Mr. West passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Fort Meade Veterans Administration Medical Center.

John was born Feb. 7, 1931 to Lester and Marie (Meents) West in Mobridge, SD. John graduated from the Mobridge High School in 1949.

John married Arlene Kautz on Feb. 20, 1955 at the United Congregational Church in Mobridge, SD. John lived in Mobridge all his life but for the 2 years he served in the United States Marine Corps from Feb. 28, 1952 and was honorably discharged on Feb. 27, 1954. John went to work for the Mobridge Tribune in 1955 which was owned by L.L. Coleman and Roy M. Gardner. He retired from the Mobridge Tribune when he was 62, but worked part time for Larry and Roberta Atkinson until a year ago.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, garage sales, and auctions. He loved watching people at the Mall while Arlene went shopping.

He was a member the United Congregational Church of Mobridge was on the ushering team for many years. John was past commander of the Parker-Browder American Legion Post #4 and was on the Honor Guard for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge of Mobridge and went through the chairs and became the administrator for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Arlene West of Mobridge, 3 daughters; Nancy (Robert) Bell of Osage, WY, Peggy (Dennis) Greene of Pacific Junction, IA, Kathy (Paul) Bloedel, of Tabor, IA, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, half sister Leatrice Zirbel of Fredericksburg, TX.

He was preceded in death by his father Lester in August 1931, mother Marie in March 1980 and a half brother Clifford in 1998.

Military honors will be provided by Parker-Browder American Legion Post #4 of Mobridge.
