John Jonas Thill, age 84 was called to eternal peace unexpectedly on Sunday, February 3, 2013. John was born December 17, 1928 to the late Victor and Anna Thill, in Glencross, SD. Through his younger years many stories were told of ranching and farming. Often John and brother Joe would ride horse cross country to Timber Lake for a dance on Saturday; and of getting into mischief.
John joined the Army with multiple friends from his community. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and when he completed his military duty, he arrived home with the Korean Service Metal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and United Nations Service Metal.
He later married Bonnie Lewis in Butte, Montana. John worked in the gold mines, and then shortly thereafter, they moved to the homestead south of Glencross. Many children were raised through the years, and new home was needed. In 1974 a new home was built 3 1/2 miles east of Timber Lake.
John enjoyed farming, ranching and spending time driving through pastures checking on cattle and crops. He often stated there is no better place to live, because he could see miles across the open prairie. John enjoyed visiting with family and friends and later grandchildren.
John was a free spirit and loved to tell stories of the past. Often family enjoying listening to him sing and recite poems. He could captivate any audience. A smile was often seen on his face, usually because he was thinking of another story to tell.
He will be sadly missed by children, Steve Thill of Mobridge, Debbie Thill of Timber Lake, Mark Thill of Mobridge, Sondra Edmonds, along with husband Brian and daughter Kelsi of Vancouver, WA, Lori Court with husband Joe and daughter Kaylee and son Braedyn.
