Funeral service for Janet E. Brockel age 86 of Java, SD will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 24, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Selby. Burial will be in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Sunday, February 23, 2014 2PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Kesling Funeral Home. Janet passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Janet Elaine (Larson) Brockel was born on October 25, 1927 in Campbell County, SD to Eddie and Ruth (Slocum) Larson. She attended rural Kuehl School and Glenham High School graduating in 1946. Following graduation she attended school that summer at Northern State College in Aberdeen. After completing the summer school Janet taught for one year at Bertch School.
Janet married Elmer Brockel on June 2, 1947 at Norway Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm in Campbell county where Janet has resided for the last 66 years. While on the farm she enjoyed being outdoors gardening, working in her flowers, mowing her yard, driving tractors, milking cows, teaching her daughters to sew, crochet and do crafts. She loved doing puzzles and watching game shows on TV. Her greatest joy was her family and sharing her faith in the Lord Jesus. She never missed a chance to share hope or encouragement and never said an unkind word about anyone. She also enjoyed going to the Selby Nutrition Center and visiting friends at the Selby Good Samaritan Center.
Janet was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and was very active in the church. She belonged to the Ladies Aid and served as president, was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hatters.
Janet is survived by four daughters, Cheryl Leyde of Apple Valley, CA, Patricia (Robert) Braasch of Mellette, SD, Cynthia (Lon) Bauer of Aberdeen, SD and Barbara (Mark) Hawkins of Thackerville, OK, ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one brother, James Larson of Seligman, MO, three sisters, Beatrice Westphal of Slidell, LA, Berniece Kom of Orofino, ID, and Lois Fiedler of Glenham, SD.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, parents, Eddie and Ruth Larson, sisters, Phyllis Larson and Helen Schroeder.
