Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 6 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM on Thursday at the church. Jane passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Jane Frances Marks, daughter of Arthur and Norma (Winters) Marks, was born on August 20, 1961, in Gettysburg, SD. She was number six in the lineup of eight siblings, one brother, and six sisters. Jane’s early formative years were spent on the family farm, helping, sometimes willingly, sometimes not so much, with the household chores, gardening, bucket calves, orphan piglets, and co-piloting grain trucks at harvest. She always added an element of fun to whatever task was presented.

As a child, Jane will be remembered for her dramatic, floor pounding temper tantrums and noteworthy screams, mostly ignored by the family. This seems to have led to her determination to never to be ignored and to be the center of all that was fun and happening.

Jane’s social skills began to be finetuned as she started her schooling. First grade through fourth were spent at Artichoke Country School, then at Gettysburg Elementary, and later graduating from Gettysburg High School in 1979. Many lifelong friendships were formed throughout her early years, including her bond with her best friend, Mary Beth Clark.

After graduation, Jane attended South Dakota State University, further honing her socialization skills, with tuition money going to experiencing the local nightlife scene. Unbeknownst by her parents she slipped off to Florida for Spring Break, only notifying them when she called for them to fly her home, as she hated the long bus ride there. The next semester’s tuition went to a trip to Chile and Brazil with friends, undoubtably a great learning experience. Following two years at SDSU, Jane decided to return to Gettysburg and went to work at the Potter County News. From there, she decided to earn her journalism degree, so she moved to Aberdeen to attend Northern State University.

While residing in Gettysburg, she joined a local women’s softball team. It was through her Coach Chester that she met the love of her life, Denis Bachman, who was the team’s third base coach. They were married on September 4, 1987. A son, Christopher (Topher), soon blessed their lives. Homes were made in Herreid, SD, McIntosh, SD, and then their forever home in Mobridge, SD, where they have resided for the past 33 years. Jane went to work at the Mobridge Tribune where she put her journalism degree to use for the past 30 years. Jane’s style was youthful, casual, comfortable, humorous, “la couture”, with numerous readers to match.

Jane also helped compile and edit the much sought after and acclaimed Marks Women Cookbook. As a homemaker, Jane’s culinary skills included her delicious lemon bars, spicy pretzels, and her grandson’s favorite M&M cookies (found in the frozen food aisle).

Jane had many interests, always involving Denny, friends, and family. She loved watching Topher’s games, playing slot machines, bowling, golfing, attending concerts and Packer games, spending weekends in Deadwood, and numerous trips to Mexico, including a just returned trip from Cancun in February. Her main love and interest were her time spent with Denny, Topher, Lindsey and her two grandchildren, Baylor and Bryar.

Her smile, her laugh, her wit, her way of life are all what Jane will always be remembered for. She had a way of making a lasting impression on anyone she encountered. Jane will be forever remembered and truly missed by all who knew and loved her and by living life to the fullest and loving life as she had, “pinky-swear”!

Left to cherish her life are her husband Denny Bachman, her son, Topher (Lindsey) Bachman, and grandchildren Bryar and Baylor, all of Mobridge, SD; siblings: Fanny (Bobby) Clark, Ginger Hegerle, and Bill Marks, all of Gettysburg, SD, Deb Kelly of Rapid City, SD, Barb (Joel) Sauer of Denver, CO, Carol Whitehead of Walsenburg, CO, and Becky (Jim) Simon of Lebanon, SD; brothers-in-law Wayne Bachman of Sioux Falls, SD, and Gary Bachman of Bowdle, SD; sister by heart Mary Beth (Darin) Moore, Ponca City, OK; aunt Ginger White, of Sioux Falls, SD; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Art and Norma (Winters) Marks; and brothers-in-law Mike Whitehead and Dave Kelly.

In honoring Jane’s wishes, memorials will be directed toward donations to the Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation to support efforts in finding a cure for the disease that took her from us.
