Obituary

Celebration of Life services for Irene Viola White age 94 of Selby will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 10:30AM at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby, SD. Internment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Viola White, 94, of Selby died September 29, 2013 at Selby Good Samaritan Center with her children Nancy, Bob, Tom and their families at her side.
Irene, daughter of William and Emma (Dienert) Kluckman was born on March 6, 1919 in Glenham, SD. She attended grade school in Pollock and Mound City and graduated from High School in Herreid, SD in 1936. She taught first through eighth grade at the Hinzman School for three years. She then adventured to California and worked as a nanny for a summer. She returned to Mound City and worked in the County Extension Office for two years. In January of 1944, she began working at the bank in Mobridge until she received a letter from Hartson that he was coming home from the South Pacific and she should give her notice because they were getting married. They were married November 26, 1944 in Mound City. Following their marriage they lived in Leavenworth, KS until Hartson's discharge in August 1945.
Hartson and Irene moved to Selby in November, 1945 where she worked as a "domestic engineer". Following Hartson's retirement in 1982, Hartson and Irene enjoyed over 20 years of winter months in Arizona.
Irene was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Women's Circle, and taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 60 years and a faithful volunteer at the Selby Good Samaritan Center since 1967.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Marvin) Kindel of Selby; sons, Robert (Lani) of Rapid City, SD, and Thomas (Renee) of Grenville, SD. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Greg (Rhonda) Stroh, Bryan Stroh, Heather (Jeremy) Jackson, Shawn Stroh, Taylor White and Karns White; five great-grandchildren and one brother, Harlan Kluckman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Hartson and a sister, Lucille Werner.
