Funeral services for Irene Phoebe Thompson, 97, of Mobridge, SD, will be at 1 PM CT, Monday, October 12, 2015 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Promise. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 4 PM Sunday with services at 7PM at the funeral home. Mrs. Thompson passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Irene Phoebe Thompson was born to Joe and Julia (Veo) Handboy on February 16, 1918 at their home in Promise, SD. She went to school at the Old Cheyenne Agency until 8th grade when she was diagnosed with glaucoma and had to quit school. She stayed home with her father, Joe, and helped raise her brothers, James and Taylor. When she turned 18 she met Max Thompson and they were married on March 15, 1937. To this union they had 12 children. Their home was in Promise but due to her husband's jobs they moved around to quite a few places. They finally settled in Promise and helped his father ranch. They eventually moved to Timber Lake due to health reasons. On October 22, 1985 Max passed away from cancer. Irene continued to live in Timber Lake and finally settled in Mobridge. She moved in with her daughter Julie and resided there until her passing.
Irene's aunt Louise Iron Bird gave her an Indian Name, Wa Cin Tanke Win meaning Patient Woman.
Irene is survived by her children, Julie (Stan) Weninger, Ethel "Tessie" (Mel) Schatz, Grace Thompson all of Mobridge, and David "Butch" (Judy) Thompson of Timber Lake, 42 grandchildren, 40 Great grandchildren, 16 great great grandchildren, and 1 great great great grandchild on the way.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Max Thompson Sr., sons, Vincent, Max Jr., Casey, Dallas, Dale, Jackie, daughters, Andrea and Louise, parents, Joe and Julia (Veo) Handboy, brothers, James, John, Taylor, Ray Handboy, sister, Mavis Handboy, half-brothers, Percy, Skyler, and Charlie Phillips, half-sisters, Ellen Bartlett and Lavina Phillips Sr.
