Iola was born on February 9, 1951, in Cannon Ball, to Annie Running Bear and Jonathan Stretches Sr. She was raised and educated in Cannon Ball and Fort Yates. She worked at William L. Guy Federal Building right out of high school. Iola then graduated with her Associates degree in Early Childhood Education in 2005 from Sitting Bull College. She worked at the Cannon Ball Head Start. Iola enjoyed the presence of children because she was a teacher. She loved teaching and learning new things from the children. When she worked for the Cannon Ball Elementary, Iola was one of the few fluent Dakota speakers left. She also helped her co-worker Todd Hansen start the Buffalo Days at the Cannon Ball Elementary School. She encouraged many to talk the Dakota language, especially the children.

Later years she also worked at the Prairie Knights Casino. Iola enjoyed donating to PKC, attending powwows, watching all her grandkids and nephews dance, talking with her "koonie's", spending time with family and friends, playing bingo, going to church, beading, sewing star quilts, and powwow outfits. Iola was strongly religious in Church and her Spiritual ways. Iola was an active member of the Cannon Ball community and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, she enjoyed going to local district meetings and tribal council meetings to express her opinions. Iola married David Two Hearts on November 12, 1981 and from this union they had 4 daughters, Tammy, Rhonda, Alaina, and Misty.
