Funeral services for Howard Sjomeling, 86, of Pollock will be at 11 AM, Saturday, March 14, 2020, at the Pollock Lutheran Church. Burial will be at the Kvernes Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 6 PM Friday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Howard passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at his home.
Howard Lynn Sjomeling, son of Gunder and Gena (Fjeldheim) Sjomeling, was born on January 6, 1934 on the family farm south of Pollock. Howard, passed away March 10, 2020 at home, on this same family farm, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the youngest of four siblings Tillie, Erling, and Glen.
He went to country school through the eighth grade, then attended Pollock High School and graduated in 1952.
He was baptized April 29, 1934, and was a lifetime member of the Pollock Lutheran Church. He also served on the Church Council and DHIA board.
On November 10, 1953, he married Katherine (Sis) Langeliers at the Pollock Lutheran parsonage in the old town. To this union four children were born Gary, Susan, Terry, and Julie.
In his early years he loved to ride race horses. He had many successful events, including never having lost a race while riding Ray Goehring's horse, Ben.
He loved to go dancing with Mom and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren in sports. His family and his farm, Sjomeling Dairy, were his love and his life. As his grandchildren and great grandchildren grew he loved to drive them, and his dog, Jag, around in his Ranger.
He is survived by his wife, Sis, of 66 years and 4 months. Gary (Betty) Sjomeling of Pollock, Susan (David) Vowell of Mobridge, Terry (Kim) Sjomeling of Pollock, Julie (Kim) Rossow of Herreid, 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and 6 step grandchildren. Also sharing his life and home were granddaughter, Candida Goehring, nephew, Dennis Sjomeling, cousin, Adeline Quenzer Schnabel, and Julie Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gunder and Gena, sister Tillie Odde, brother-in-law Carl Odde, brother Erling, sister-in-law Isabelle, brother Glenn, sister-in-law Mary Ann, father-in-law Lawrence Langeliers, mother-in-law Katie Langeliers, brother-in-law Dale Davis, sister in law Wilma Davis, brother-in-law Vernon Slagh, and Adeline (Quenzer) Schnabel.
