Private family services Horace "Guy" Gilbert, 82, of Promise will be at Kesling Funeral Chapel in Mobridge. Burial will be in the Blackfoot Ascension Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Guy passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at Monument Health in Rapid City.
Horace Guy Gilbert was born August 29, 1937 on Swan Creek in Dewey County, South Dakota to William and Ethel Thompson Gilbert.
Guy attended Promise Day School, Wakpala School and Cheyenne Agency, SD where he graduated from high school. He then went on and attended Springfield Carpentry School. After completing school in Springfield he was drafted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged in 1963 at Shreveport, LA where he made his home. While in Shreveport he married Carolyn and they had one son; Ralph in 1965. He worked for Brown Builders as Construction Foreman for 27 years, retiring in 2011. While in Bossier City, he married Polly. Following Polly's death, he was a snowbird for several years, finally staying permanently in Promise, SD in 2011 where he lived the remainder of his life. He was very active, traveling to White Horse for lunch daily, playing Bingo and visiting with his neighbors. He was very eager to offer his knowledge, skills, and abilities when needed and would proudly share all his stories of the things he had built. He helped build the Bell Towers for Emanuel Episcopal Church in White Horse and St Mary's Episcopal Church in Promise to name a few. He Loved to visit and tell his life stories.
He was an active Military Honor Guard Member of Post 191, Eagle Butte, SD and was also a life time member of the VFW in Bossier City, La.
Guy is survived by his only son Ralph(Liz and her children) of San Antonio, TX, 2 granddaughters, his only sister, Mary Jewett of White Horse, his sister in law, Carol Gilbert of Mobridge and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Will Gilbert and mother, Ethel Marshall, step-father, Sibby Marshall; two brothers, William (Scotch) Gilbert and Arthur Marshall; his wives, Polly and Carolyn; his brother in law, Albert (Pinky) Jewett; nephews Scottie Gilbert and Rodney Martin; and his special friend Esther Sneed.
