Herbert Adam Schlecht was born October 27, 1926 on a farm in Walworth county 9 miles southwest of Bowdle, SD to Adam and Emily Schlecht. He was baptized December 5, 1926 at Trinity Lutheran church (The Baer Church) 12 miles southwest of Bowdle, in Walworth County by Pastor F. Traub.

In 1929 he moved to Mobridge with his parents and older brother Alvin. They became members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church of Mobridge. He attended German Sunday School until 1938 when it was then changed to English. He was confirmed at Zion by Pastor Gustav Schlegel in 1940. He attended Mobridge public schools and Northwestern Lutheran Academy.
Herb started working at Mobridge Creamery and Produce in 1943. In 1952 he started working in the West River Area with a Seismograph crew. He then worked at the Mobil Gas Station until 1961. In 1962 he started as a Highway Contract Mail Carrier and worked for 26 years until 1988, when he retired due to health concerns.

Herb and Phyllis (Clifton) Schlecht were married June 15, 1947 at Zion. They had two daughters Janette and Karin.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, in 2000, sister Lorraine in 1929, mother Emily in 1987, father Adam in 1990, brother Alvin in 2012, several sister in laws, and brother in laws.

Survivors include his two daughters Janette Nelson and Karin (Richard) Iverson. Seven grandchildren Stephanie (Daniel) Berberich, Kevin (fiancée Bev Willis) Nelson, Lisa (fiancée Jim Hanson) Nelson, Sarah Iverson, Matt (Jodi) Iverson, Hans Iverson, and Josh (Jen) Iverson. He is also survived by six great grandchildren Brenndin Nelson, Ashton, Cora, Eli, and Gideon Berberich, and Soren Iverson. Herb is also survived by two brothers Gene (Linda Nakamura) Schlecht, Don (Lyda) Schlecht, two sister in laws Gertrude Erickson, Leona Schlecht, one brother in law John Clifton, and many nieces and nephews.

Herb was a kind, gentle, and compassionate man who desired to live a good life in the same community his whole life. He appreciated life's simple things and held pride in others who perhaps did more flashy things, while he stayed the course. He had an uncanny ability to recall historical details of both family and community. His stories of the past held truth and a twist of humor that made his storytelling a treasure. Even as his eyes began to fail over the later years, he continued to see things with his heart, to see the good in others and share in the sorrows others experienced.

Blessed be his memory.
