Obituary

Funeral services for Henry Schaffer 95 of Mound City will be Tuesday October 28, 2014 10:30 AM at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Mound City, SD. Rev. Jeremy Wosje officiating. Burial will be in the Mound City, Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Monday from 5 PM until 7:00 PM at the Church with the family present from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. Mr. Schaffer passed away October 24, 20014 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center in Selby, SD.

Henry was called to his eternal home October 24, 2014 at the age of 95. He was born February 18, 1919 to Michael and Carolina (Zeller) Schaffer on a farm near Artas, SD. He grew up on the same farm and attended rural school. Henry entered the US Army and served during WW II. While in the Army he was stationed in Australia and New Guinea transporting supplies to the troops fighting in the Guadalcanal Zone. He was Honorably discharged August 8, 1945. He then returned to South Dakota and on June 23, 1946 he married Frieda Rueb at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Mound City, SD. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm east of Mound City. In 1956 they built a new home on the farm. Henry enjoyed raising hogs, cattle and grains on the farm and he and Frieda were blessed with 6 children. When they retired in 1981 they moved to Mound City and built a new home. This is where Henry lived until moving to the Selby Good Samaritan Center in 2007.

During his retirement Henry enjoyed making wooden scroll saw designs which he and Frieda would sell at craft fairs. Following the death of his wife Frieda, Henry astonished his family with his creative cooking skills.

Henry enjoyed fishing and was always ready to go anytime his sons could take him. He also enjoyed playing cards nearly everyday while in the care center and was also a great domino player.

He was baptized at the Artas Reformed Church and following their marriage he took instruction to become a member and was confirmed at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in 1947. Henry was a long time member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He will be remembered by his family as a wonderful Christian father.

He is survived by his children; Kathleen K. Schilling of Denver, CO., Dale (Alta) Schaffer of Waterville, MN., Ross (Coleen) Schaffer of McIntosh, SD, Craig Schaffer of Mound City, SD, Mark (Theresa) Schaffer of Watertown, SD and Joel Schaffer of Mobridge, SD.,15 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and one sister in law Mathilda Schaffer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Frieda in 2005, 8 brothers and sisters.
