Henrietta M. Lind was born on July 31, 1938 in Fort Yates, ND to Henry and Jane (Eagle) McLain of Wakpala, SD. She grew up and attended school in Wakpala, SD on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. She married Lawrence "Swede" Lind on May 10, 1956 in Mobridge, SD. They made their home on a ranch south of Timber Lake, SD. Henrietta was a rancher's wife helping Swede with all ranching and household chores, while also raising her family. Swede passed away on February 23, 1983. Following his passing, Henrietta moved into Timber Lake, SD. In 1985. She moved to Eagle Butte where she went to school to be an EMT. She also worked at Lynn's Super Value as the Deli head cook; and she also worked at the Tasty Freeze until it closed. Henrietta then attended school in Minneapolis, MN to be a dialysis aid. After finishing school, she returned to Eagle Butte and worked as a Dialysis Aid until her retirement.
Henrietta enjoyed cooking, baking and loved to dance. She also had a garden every year and she was known for her beautiful flowers and lawn. While her children were growing up, she took her turn as a 4-H leader for her and neighbors' children . Swede and Henrietta were big believers in education, which is why Henrietta got her GED in Eagle Butte. She was everyone's grandma in the No Heart Community, providing food who needed it, especially the children. Henrietta found humor in everyday in spite of life's many challenges and trials; and, she was grateful and felt blessed and wealthly because of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, close friends and relatives and large extended family. She was an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and an honorary member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.
