Funeral services for Helen Walth, age 76, Mobridge will be 2:00 PM, Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at New Freedom Baptist Church in Mobridge. Visitation will be Thursday, starting at 2:00 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Home. Burial will be Monday, February 11, 2012 at 12PM MT at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Helen passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at her home in Mobridge.
Helen was born June 1, 1936 to August and Christine (Linderman) Klingman on the farm 6 miles west of Isabel, SD. When in the first grade the family move to within 1/4 mile of the school, 1 mile father west. She attended Center School until Thanksgiving weekend while in the fifth grade. They then moved to within 1/2 mile of Isabel where Helen attended school in town graduating from Isabel High School with the class of 1954.
After graduation Helen went to Mobridge, SD to seek employment. Marvin Walth had been an employee at the Red Owl Store and had been in a car accident the weekend before, so there was an opening at the store and Helen was hired. The store closed in 1955 and Helen went to work for Leo E. Schirber, Inc. the ford dealer. It was at the Red Owl Store where she then met Marvin Walth, as he came back to work in the fall of 1954 after recuperating for several months as a result of the accident.
In 1959 Helen and Marvin got married. In 1962 she went to work for Penneys. In 1967 they adopted a son whom they named Larry. Helen quit work to be a stay at home Mom, but helped out at Penneys when needed. Helen then went to work for Coca-Cola where she was employed for 15 years until they sold out. She then went to work for Homestead Lumber part time, then, to Cardinal Plastics until they closed.
Helen was active in the Northern Oahe Historical Society, and at one time held every office within the organization. She helped in putting together the Diamond Jubilee History Book, and was involved in the State's Centennial celebration in Mobridge., She was involved in the Mobridge Chapter of AARP and has been actively involved in her church. She has taught Sunday School, was Church Treasurer, taught Children's Church and sang in the choir as well as other special music.
Helen loved to garden and can the produce from her garden. She loved to start her own plants and even to mix her own starting soil. She also loved to cook, bake and try new recipes and making up some of her own. She often cooked German foods just so she wouldn't forget so the art would not be lost. Helen was a great mom and grandmother to her family, and is still called mom by most of Larry's friends. Helen had a special bond with her daughter-in-law Judy and Larry is the apple of her eye. John Stover and Steve Schneider are considered her children.
Helen is survived by one son; Larry and his wife Judy, 3 grandchildren; Travis (Danielle) Johnston, Amy (Zach) Kirkwood, and Amanda (Bill) Harbeson. 8 great grandchildren, Brittany, Kelsie, Cameron, Derek, Cooper, Bella, Lexus and Hannah, 2 sisters; Esther Lipp of Rapid City, SD; and Bertha Delp of Dalton, NE, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, her father when she was a small child, her mother, Christina; sister; Edna, Alma, and Elvina, brothers; Ed, John and Oscar and 2 in infancy.
Donation may be given to Mobridge Ambulance for a stair chair or to the New Freedom Church for a steeple.
