Helen Sophie Thorstenson was born March 20, 1918 to Carl and Gunelda (Amundson) Hansen on a farm in Campbell County S.D. After her father died in 1929, she moved with her family to her grandparents' home. Helen attended the Amundson country school until 1929 when her family moved to Mobridge when she finished her education.

She married Merrill Thorstenson on March 30, 1937. They lived in Selby, S.D. before moving to Mobridge. Helen has an avid reader and, as a child, was excited when she found out that there was a place where she could check out books for free. Even when macular degeneration took her eyesight, she continued to listen to books on tape. Besides reading, she loved doing crossword puzzles and playing games of any kind which keep her mind sharp up to the end of her life. She was very active in the Mobridge community, belonging to extension clubs, church circles, bridge clubs, hospital auxiliary to name a few. Trinity Lutheran Church also held a special place in her life, the church where her grandfather, Nels Amundson, broke ground at its current location.

She is survived by one daughter, Deb Thorstenson, of Aberdeen and five grandchildren, Jon Milbrandt of Madison, WI; Dave Milbrandt (Kellie) of Grant, MN; Brianne Hofer of Aberdeen; A.J. Hofer (Laura) of Brookings and Kelsey Hofer of Tampa, FL. In addition, she had four great grandchildren, Kristen Milbrandt of Madison; WI; Melissa Milbrandt of Madison, WI; Ella Donat of Aberdeen; and Maxwell Milbrandt of Grant, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years and three children, daughter, Marilyn; daughter, Doni and son, James Dean; her parents, two brothers and one sister.
