Helen passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 at her home.

Helen (Vollmer) Hulm was born to Anton and Ottilia (Reiss) Voller on November 2, 1915 at her parents' home in Strasburg, North Dakota; where she grew up and learned about farm life. Helen's formal education was received from St. Peter and Paul catholic grade school. Her schooling ended when she graduated from the 8th grade. As was the custom in many families in at that time, she was required to stay at home and help with farm chores and help take care of her younger siblings. Helen was the oldest of nine children. She also had to do a lot of babysitting for neighboring families.

Helen met the love of her life, Sylvester (Syl) Hulm in 1936 at a dance. They were married in 1937 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, North Dakota. They moved to Lamoure, North Dakota, where they worked in the potato fields. After their first daughter (Bertha) was born they moved back to Hague, North Dakota and farmed with Sylvester's parents until they homesteaded on a farm in Timber Lake, South Dakota in 1941. They had two more daughters (Cecelia and Helen) which completed their family. Helen worked on the farm side by side with her husband. Her brother-in-law Anton said, "She's a better farm hand than any man you could hire." They resided on their farm until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to Mobridge, South Dakota. Due to Sylvester's failing health, they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1990 to be closer to needed health facilities. After Sylvester's death in 1995, Helen remained in Lincoln and lived alone for several years before moving in with her daughter Bertha and son-in-law Joseph. In 2003 she moved with them to Loveland, Colorado, where she resided until her death.

Helen was a wonderful cook and baker. Her excellent Kucha, glazed doughnuts and garlic buns were the grandchildren's delight. Her Angel Food Cake was an unsurpassed creation. She was known to prepare meals for anyone coming to her home, whether they were family, friends or strangers. Everyone was welcome at her table. Helen's favorite hobby was crocheting beautiful doilies, tablecloths, pillow cases and bedspreads. Much of her crocheting was donated to the church bazaars or given to friends and relatives as special gifts. She also loved quilting and her girls are all recipients of those nice warm decorative quilts.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Bertha (Joe) Keller of Loveland, Co,; Cecelia (Roger) Meier of Allendale, AZ; and Helen (Louie) Keller of Timber Lake, SD.; her brothers, Tony Voller of Mobridge, SD; William (Alvina) Voller of Mobridge, SD; Andrew (Violet) Voller of Mobridge, SD. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents Anton and Ottilia Voller, her husband Sylvester, three sisters, Bertha, Margaret and Hilda; two brothers, Arthur and Joseph and one grandson David Keller; and one great-granddaughter, Becca Primrose.
