Hazel Melvina McMurlyn was born on November 12, 1921 to Olaf and Marthe (Hafnor) Ekrem in Mobridge. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Selby High School in 1938. Following high school she attended the Mankato Business College. She was employed by the US War Department as a secretary for several years. She also worked for the US Civil Service in which she got to travel to Tokyo, Japan and work for two years. She was proud that she was able to serve her country through the civil service. After her return Hazel and her mother moved to Aberdeen before moving to Eugene, OR. While living in Eugene she met Cliff McMurlyn. They got married and made their home there. Together they ran a Mobil Gas Station in Eugene. Due to health problems Cliff had them move to Lodi, CA in 1981. Well there Hazel worked for Diamond Walnuts and a myrtle wood factory. She remained in Lodi until after Cliffs passing in 2004 when she moved to Selby to be closer to family.

Hazel loved fishing, camping and riding in their white T-Bird with Cliff while in Lodi. She also enjoyed shopping trips with her niece Susan to Aberdeen, playing cards and doing puzzles. She was very active in Bethany Lutheran Church Ladies Aid, her Bible Study group and Christian Women.

She is survived by a step-son, Cliff (Yelenia) McMurlyn of North Sioux City, IA,
