Harold J. Kosel was born October 26, 1940 in Mobridge to Sam and Katie Aman Kosel. He grew up on the family farm in Mound City, living and working there his entire life.
Harold was baptized and confirmed at St Paul Lutheran Church in Mound City and was a lifetime member. In 1960, Harold joined the army and served for 16 months.
On March 31, 1967 Harold married Carolyn Robb at St. Paul. Harold said he met Carolyn while she was vacationing in Mound City and he convinced her to stay forever. She joined him on the farm in a house that didn't yet have indoor plumbing. Harold said Carolyn was 'really a remarkable woman' and he marveled at how she jumped in to make their house a home, doing much of the work herself. Together, they managed the family farm until 1996. Harold then took on the role of Weed Supervisor for Campbell County and held that position for the next 18 years.
Harold was a dedicated Vigortone dealer since 1974, placing his final order from his hospital bed on the day he passed away. Thanks to his success with the Vigortone group, he and Carolyn did quite a bit of traveling in the earlier years, including trips around the United States, several cruises, and international journeys – his favorite being the trip to England.
What Harold enjoyed most was spending time visiting with friends. He loved to tell stories and listen to the adventures of others. He also enjoyed his grandchildren very much. He loved polka music and dancing with his granddaughter Kelli before church. He loved sharing the world of farming with his grandson Josh and teaching him the trade. He loved talking to his granddaughter Karra on her drive home about their favorite dishes cooked up by Carolyn over the years. He loved her chicken and dumplings, and strudels, and 'the best darn fried chicken you ever had' every Sunday. Harold was the life of every party. He loved to laugh, and to make others laugh. He laughed with his entire soul. It was infectious and hearty and will never be forgotten.
He is proceeded in death by his father Sam, his mother Katie, his sister Deloris, his brother-in-law Alex Hamilton, and his grandson Justin Sharp.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; his step-son Robert (Sherryl) Lee, grandson Joshua (Meagan) Sharp and granddaughter Jen (TJ) Mittleider; step-daughter Arlet Lapp, granddaughters Kelli (Jeff) Severson and Karra (Michael) French, and grandson Korey Lapp; step-son Pete (Carol) Sharp, granddaughters Sarah Dixon and Emily (Mike) Sollenberger, and grandson Steven Sharp; step-daughter Nadine Sharp, and grandsons Jason Sharp and Rory Johnson; daughter-in-law Pam (Jon) Kossan; his nieces Jean Evans, and Cindy and Shelly Hamilton; and 17 mostly wonderful great-grandchildren.
