Guyla Ann "Alice" Gunville was born on August 4, 1956 at the Cheyenne River Agency to Elmer and Phyllis Gunville. Oldest of seven children Guyla grew up with her grandparents Joe and Evelyn Gunville and Tuffy and Mary Ducheneaux. She attended her grade school years in Eagle Butte. Guyla attended Immaculate Conception High School in Stephan, South Dakota her freshman year and graduated from Cheyenne – Eagle Butte High School in 1974. Guyla was involved in cheerleading, track and rodeo. In 1967 she won the title of Timber Lake Saddle Club Queen. In 1968 she was the 4-H Dewey County Rodeo Queen. In 1969 Guyla she was named the Sitting Bull Stampede Rodeo Queen. In 1972 Guyla became the Cheyenne River Rodeo Queen. Guyla was very proud that her mother Phyllis Ducheneaux Gunville was the first Cheyenne River Fair Queen in 1952. She met "Wild" Bill Knight the love of her life in 1971, who turned out to be her "Uncrowned Champion" bronc rider. From this union three children were born Coy, Sarah and Francesca. As their kids were born in different decades the 70's, 80's, and 90's parenting skills changed too. Guyla loved more than ever her children. Her grandson Grady was the biggest joy in her life. While his mother, Sarah, furthered her education by attending college locally Grandma Guyla spent many hours with him. As he got older they spent endless hours playing "fort" on her bed, racing his cars and building some pretty funny looking horses, but through it all she cherished every minute she had with him. Guyla was especially proud of her educational accomplishments. She received her LPN License in 1980 graduating from St. Mary's Nursing School with honors. Guyla then worked in the health field for approximately five years. In 1987 she began working at the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School for the Tribal Work Experience Program. Guyla was then hired full time as an Education Aide and progressed to the title of Registrar during her tenure. She worked for the B.I.A. Education system for 18 years. While a full-time employee she attended Cheyenne River Community College. She obtained an AA Degree in General Studies and an AA degree in Social Work. Graduating in 2000 with both Degrees she was consistently on the Dean's List. She retired from the B.I.A in 2007. Guyla was especially proud of her children, Coy for his unbeatable work ethic and running all those hundreds of errands; daughter Sarah for giving her the cutest grandson a grandmother could ever have and for her unfailing assistance whenever needed; Annie for her awesome barrel racing and horse racing abilities and for being owner, trainer and jockey of her favorite horse "July." Guyla was very fond of her collectables and also loved animals. Guyla "Alice" was proud to be the daughter of the greatest dad and mom Elmer and Phyllis Gunville. Guyla will always be remembered inheriting the Coke stand from her mom and keeping the tradition at the CRST Labor Day Fair and Rodeos. She enjoyed rodeos, Biblical Archaeology, reading and staying current with world news. She will be greatly missed by her husband Wild Bill Knight. Children; Coy Knight, Sarah Knight, Annie Knight, of Eagle Butte and grandson Grady. Siblings, Latonne Gunville, Romey (Joyce) Gunville, Bill (Margaret) Gunville, EJ Gunville, JoLavae Gunville, Dustin (Glenna) Gunville, all of Eagle Butte.
