Skip passed away Monday, April 19, 2021, in Selby.

Granville (Skip) Dexter Glerup was born north of Glenham on December 9, 1932 to Dexter Glerup and Nicholena Farstad Glerup. He was the fourth of six children; He had three older brothers: Donald (Tex), Robert (Red) and Melvin. One younger brother Edwin and one younger sister Agnes, whom he was very close to.

Being raised in the country, Skip's early years of education were obtained at a country school, the Rabenberg school. He talked a few times of riding horses or taking a horse drawn wagon to school. He attended Selby High School with the class of 1952.

After High School Skip helped on the farm in 1952 and 1953. Skip was drafted into the Army in February 1953. During his time serving in the Army he went to several countries, some of them included Austria and Australia with the 63rd Signal Battalion. When asked about his service by his children, he replied that his job was "like Radar's, on MASH," the TV show, a secretary to the colonel.

Skip and his brother Edwin attended mechanic's school in Nashville, TN. He worked for Hieb Chevrolet, Selby Implement and Selby School. While working at the school he was helpful in many ways; he watched the kids during and after lunch recess, helped in the lunchroom and drove the school bus. After retirement he enjoyed helping his nephew Brian on the farm. Doing the tasks he liked and setting his own hours (never before 10 AM.)

Skip enjoyed sports throughout his life, He played basketball and ran track in high school. In adulthood he played softball well into his 40's, but Skip's true love in sports was VOLLEYBALL. Wednesday nights in the winter would find him at the gym playing the sport he loved the most. In addition to playing in Selby, he and his teammates would travel to Lowry, Glenham and Leola for tournaments. Once at a tournament in Leola, some young men from Aberdeen were laughing when the old guys took the court prior to their match. When the young men left the court after their match they weren't laughing anymore. Rain, sleet, snow or blizzards did not keep them from playing their beloved volleyball; much to the aggravation of family members.

Skip was also referred to as the Official Keeper of the International Rules for the Washer Board Game. When playing with Skip just because you were ahead does not mean you would win. He would let you get a good lead and then just leave you in the dust in just one turn. Bo Jackson might have known all about football and all about baseball but Skip knew all about Washerboard!!! Skip made many washer games for others, getting pleasure from sharing his love of the game with them.

Skip was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran in rural Selby in 1948. Skip was a long-time member of St John's Lutheran Church in Selby, Selby VFW 5094, and Frederick Schauer Legion Post 100. He served as commander for several years. He marched in many parades, participated in graveside honors and the famous Turkey Shoots where he enjoyed running the horse race game for the kids.

Skip is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna: daughters, Kimberly (Gary) Markley, Mandan, ND, Amber (Alan) Landis, Mobridge, SD, son, Donovan (Melissa) Glerup, Selby, SD; grandchildren, Joshua Fleming, Eric Fleming, Morgan Markley, MaKenna Esry, Cayden Glerup, Caden Mudge-Glerup; great grandchildren, Sloane Kelly and McNamara Fleming, brother, Melvin Glerup.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dexter and Nicholena, step mother, Blanche, brothers, Donald (Tex), Robert, Edwin, and sister, Agnes Brockel, grandchildren, Katheryn Glerup & Dakota Jordan.
