Graveside services for Germaine Demery, 80, of Kenel will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 9, 2020 at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery in Kenel, SD. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Kesling Funeral Home. Germaine passed away Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.

Germaine E. (Left Hand) Demery was born on January 11, 1940 in Old Kenel, SD to George and Mary (Poitra) Left Hand.

Germaine attended elementary school in Old Kenel and the Stephan Boarding School in Stephan, SD. She graduated from Standing Rock Community High School on May 23, 1958. In 1971 she attended United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) and graduated in May of 1973 with a Criminal Justice Degree. In the early 80's she attended classes at Standing Rock Community College and worked as the Secretary for the SBCC president Dr. Wayne Stien. Germaine served on several boards and committees during her long and successful career. She received an honorary degree from the Sitting Bull College (SBC) in 2018.

She worked as a Juvenile Detention Officer and for the Young Adult Conservation Camp (YACC). She was also employed with the Standing Rock Police Station as a dispatcher. In 1983 she began her employment with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Courts. She worked there until her retirement in 2012. Germaine also served on the Sitting Bull College Board of Trustees, Standing Rock Pardon Board, and the Kenel Pow Wow Committee

Germaine was a devout Catholic who dedicated her time to serve her beloved Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She attended many church functions, kept the church in order for mass, helped organize church activities and fundraisers.

She married Leslie Mark Demery in 1975 on New Year's Day. To this union seven children were born.

She was an advocate for Justice, and was the Co-Chair of the Justice for Candy Rough Surface Murder case & was featured on a segment of NBC news. She loved her children and grandchildren tremendously and raised several grand-children and 1 great grandchild. She was such a great mother and grandmother all her life….

Germaine is survived by her children, "Dozer", Deanne Bear Catches, Delray (LaSammi) Demery, Leslee "Penny" (Milo) all of Kenel SD, Chase (Elena)   Demery, Billings Mt, Santana Mejia, of Mandan ND Great Grandson Camree Pete, of Kenel, SD, Grandchildren: Shilo, Nedda, Dylan, Tori, Aaron, Caine, Tucker, Brittney, Tru, Katie, Keifer, Kelsey, Gunner, Lane, Kariss, Dadriam, Raven,     Aurora and Keegan, 25 Great-Grandchildren, Sisters: Elaine St. John, & Shirley Poitra, and 1 brother, Clayton Left Hand all of Kenel SD

Germaine was preceded in death by her parents, the late George & Mary Jane (Poitra) Left Hand, 3 daughters, Truly, Coleen & Fran Demery, Brother, Benny and Ambrose Left Hand, Sisters, Minnie Lafromboise, Ester Silk, Elsie Martin, Alberta Rough Surface, Roseanne Boyd, Isabelle Crow Feather, Leona Claymore, and her husband, Leslie Demery, and one granddaughter, Lesley Rae Demery.
