Due to weather George Iron Shield funeral services have been changed

Funeral services for George S. Iron Shield, 79, Ft. Yates will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 14, 2019 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at the All Nation Veteran's Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. All night wake will begin Sunday, October 13, 2019 at 5:00 PM with a Rosary at 6:00 PM at the A.J. Agard Building. George passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the IHS Hospital in Ft. Yates.

George Sherman Ironshield was born April 7, 1940 near Bullhead, SD. He attended Rock Creek, Fort Yates, St. Joseph's Indian School and Marty Indian School. He also attended Southern State Teacher's school in Springfield, SD, Wahpeton State School of Science for auto mechanics and machine shop then studied in Denver to become a certified counselor in the following areas: medical detox, alcohol and death.

George signed up for all branches of the military and waited for the first branch to respond. The first was the Air Force. After returning home from the military in 1961, he worked as a farmer with his uncle, Lincoln Hairychin. He also joined the American Legion post out of Bullhead, SD where his life as a medicine man began by singing a calling back of the Spirit Song and praying over the soldier's bodies before burial. From that point on he has continued to do this for over 54 years.

George worked many years as a drug and alcohol counselor. He has touched many lives through prayer and spiritual guidance. He says "if we can bridge the knowledge and oral teachings from our old Lakota culture to our new culture, our children will have a better chance of knowing who we really are."

George is survived by his wife, Juanita, son, Monte, daughter Margaret, 9 grandchildren, Brother Roger Ironshield, numerous nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his daughter, Faith Marie, his sons, Peter Paul, Robert Sherman (Bobo) Ironshield, parents, George and Irene Ironshield, brother, Robert Joseph Ironshield, two sisters, Darlene, Delores Ironshield, grandparents, Jochim and Victoria Hairyshin.
