Mass of Christian Burial for Genevieve Kightlinger, age 100, 6 months, and 1 day of Selby will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, June 4, 2021, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Selby. Burial will be at the Selby Memorial Gardens next to her husband, Homer Kightlinger under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A Rosary service will be at 10 AM. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM. Genevieve passed away Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Monument Health in Deadwood.
Genevieve Ann Brandner, daughter of Joe and Mary E. (Heid) Brandner, was born November 29, 1920 in Campbell County near Herreid. She attended Chaffee School through the eighth grade and graduated from Herreid High School in 1938. She received her teaching certificate through Presentation College and earned her Bachelor degree in 1971 from Northern State College after attending many summer schools, doing correspondence work and attending various extension courses within the area.
She worked at Frederick and Nelson Store and later at Boeing Aircraft as a file clerk for a time in Seattle, Washington during World War II.
She married Homer Kightlinger in 1953 at St. Joseph's in Mobridge. They live at Mound City for a while then moved to Selby where she resided over 50 years.
She taught rural schools in Campbell, Day and Walworth counties, then in Akaska and Java. Her teaching career spanned 31 years.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby and the church Altar Society, the Selby Senior Citizens and was its treasurer for many years. She also was a member of the Selby Royal Neighbors of America.
Her interests in earlier years were embroidering and quilt making. She enjoyed traveling, and did so in 35 states.
In later years she loved playing cards, reading, collecting recipes and being with her family.
Her son Alan and daughter-in-law Dorna were blessed to have her stay with them at their home near Deadwood for nearly four years before her passing.
Genevieve is survived by two sons, Alan Kightlinger and wife Dorna of Deadwood, and Mark Kightlinger of Sioux Falls, also four grandchildren, Jana, Rachel, Alana and Blair and four great grandchildren Elasia, Ekara, Avalon and Esteria.
She is also survived by one brother, Walter (Marianne) Brandner of Dell Rapids and one sister, Florence Wittmeier of Sturgis and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Kightlinger, May 28, 1993, her father, Joe Brandner of Herreid, September 14, 1977 and her mother, Mary E. Brandner November 6, 1989, two brothers, Bert Brandner, Feb. 15 2011 and Clem Brandner, Dec. 2020, two sisters, Beatrice "Betty" Senftner and Lois Seiler, three brothers-in-law, Raymond Senftner, Donald Seiler and Maynard Wittmeier and five nephews, Duane Wittmeier, George Wittmeier, Willie Seiler, Bill Senftner and Gary Seiler and one niece, Debra (Seiler) Ritter.
