Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Garnet Peterson, age 91 of Aberdeen formally of Timber Lake will be 10:00 AM MT Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be in Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 28, 2015 starting at 5PM with prayer service at 7PM at the church. Garnet passed away, Saturday, January 24, 2015, at her home.
Garnet Waive Peterson, was born to Milton D. Lyons and Lillie Pearl (Rubeirt) Lyons on February 18, 1923 in Eugene, Oregon. Her family moved to Tucson, Az, where she grew up and then worked as a nanny, and as a telephone operator for the Mountain States Telephone Company during WWII. After the war ended she transferred back to Eugene, Oregon, to work for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Garnet met Pat when he was stationed with the Army Air Corp in Tucson, when her sister, May, started dating Pat's brother Gorman. She came to visit May, Gorman, and Pat in South Dakota, and ended up reconnecting with, Pat, the love of her life. Garnet and Pat were married on December 18, 1948, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Lemmon, SD.

Garnet was member of Holy Cross Catholic and Altar Society until retirement, then at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Band 6 Altar Society. She was active in her community as a member of the Jolly 8 Extension Club, Charter member of the Circle C Cowbelles, along with volunteering for many hometown and family events.

Garnet is survived by Christie Peterson, Minneapolis, MN. Pat Derzab, Aberdeen, SD, grandson's David (Jodi Bush) Derzab, Aberdeen, SD, John Derzab and Evan and Owen of Hot Springs, SD, and granddaughter, Sonja (Jeremiah) Holman and Xander and Mady May, nephews and sons, Tom (Marty) Peterson, Tyler, Tobi, and Tara May, Jerry (Marla) Peterson, Shay and Rachel, Terry (Pat) Bowlby and family of Toledo, Ohio, Michael (Kim) Bowlby, and family of Moberly, Mo., and Mary (Lynn) Tjeerdsma of Alexandria, VA. and family, and sister in law, Patricia Bowlby of Rapid City, and all our West River family.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Holy Cross Catholic Church Building Fund, or the Timber Lake Museum.
