Memorial services for Fred Seyer of Las Vegas, Nevada will be at 11 AM, Saturday August 6, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby. Pastor Dale Hamre will be officiating. Inurnment will take placed at Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Fred died Wednesday, June 8, 2011 in Mobridge, South Dakota. He had been diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2009. He returned to South Dakota a couple days prior to his death to visit family, and was able to return to the home he was born in, the night before his passing. His body was cremated as per his wishes.
Fred Frank Seyer, Jr., the son of Fred C. Seyer and Bertha (Gosch) Seyer was born on August 7, 1939 on the family farm near Selby, South Dakota. This was the home which he grew up in and returned to throughout his lifetime. He attended grade school at the rural West Spring Valley School near his home and then attended Selby High School. As a youth he was involved with 4-H, Luther League, track, football, band and was a confirmed member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Selby. He attended South Dakota American Legion Boy's State.
Following high school he entered South Dakota State College in Brookings. He became a member of the South Dakota National Guards and received his honorable discharge in October 1968. He worked various jobs until re-entering college at Minot State College (Minot, ND) where he graduated with a degree in Business in 1967 and then ventured west pursuing job opportunities in the Southwest United States. He became a resident of Las Vegas and began a long career in the gaming business. While in Las Vegas he obtained a real estate license and a pilot license. He loved flying over the Nevada deserts, the Grand Canyon, Lake Mead and the growing city of Las Vegas. He had a passion for hiking in the Red Rocks Canyon where he climbed many of the higher peaks and enjoyed the challenge of many of the trails. He was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Las Vegas.
Fred is survived by a special friend, Julie Chen of Las Vegas; one sister, Carol (Charles) Linn of Rapid City, South Dakota; one brother, Robert (Pamela) Seyer of Selby, South Dakota; two nephews, Barry (Karla) Seyer of Pierre and Thomas (Kristen) Linn of Bismarck, ND; five nieces, Laurie (Jim) Brigden of Webster, NY, Jody (David) Unruh of Fort Pierre, Jackie (Brace) Seyer-Prouty of Pierre, Kelly (Brian) Vander Weyst of Aberdeen and Heidi Seyer of Rochester, MN ; and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father in January 1978; his mother in July 2001; his brother Leonard Seyer in January 1999; and two nephews: Clyde Linn in November 1980 and Cody Seyer in October 1998.
