Funeral services for Fred Pfeifle, age 94, of Selby will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 4, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church in Selby. Burial will be at 1 PM MT, Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 5 PM Sunday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Fred passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Southridge Healthcare in Sioux Falls.
Fred was born on June 29, 1919 on a farm NW of Herreid to Gottlieb and Karolina (Kogele) Pfeifle. During the late 1930's Fred lived with Otto and Albina Hoff NE of Eureka until he was 18 years old. Fred served in the US Army and took part in the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, Italy, landing in southern France and up the Rhine River. Fred served in the 3rd infantry division and earned seven major battle stars.
Fred married Alice Wacker on June 29, 1947 at Herreid Congregational Church. They made their home in Sturgis for a short time and in 1948 moved to Mound City where Fred worked for Campbell County, Hi-Way Department. They moved to Selby in 1956 where he worked as an Equipment operator and electrician for Cam-Wal Electric retiring on July 1, 1981.
Fred was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, American Legion, Lifetime VFW member, charter Lion Club member and on the Selby Opera House Restoration Committee. This spring he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award which is one of the highest Awards in the Lions Organization.
Fred enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.
Fred is survived by 2 sons; James Pfeifle of Maricopa, AZ, Michael Pfeifle of Sioux Falls, SD., eight grandchildren; Emily (Patrick) Fischer of Sioux City, Iowa, Matthew Pfeifle of Chandler, AZ, Sarah Pfeifle of St. Paul, MN, Jameson Pfeifle of Keyston, SD, Samuel Pfeifle of Sioux Falls, SD, Gina Pfeifle of Sioux Falls, SD Georgia Pfeifle of Sioux Falls, SD, Gloria Pfeifle of Sioux Falls, SD, two sisters; Lillian (Pfeifle) Heisler of St. Lucia, FL, and Irene (Pfeifle) Oster of Spearfish, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Alice, 5 brothers; Gottlieb, Jake, Albert, Walter and Herb Geigle, 2 sisters; Alvina (Pfeifle) Aman and Elsie (Pfeifle) Rundlett.
