Funeral services for Frank Red Legs, 60, of Little Eagle will be at 11 AM, Friday, June 7, 2024, at the Little Eagle Blue Gym. Burial will be at Good Shepherd Episcopal Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Wake services will be at 7 PM Thursday at the gym. Frank passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at his home.
Frank Wayne Red Legs was born on July 26, 1963 in Fort Yates, ND to Henry Red Legs Sr., and Magdaline (Red Door) Red Legs. He was a Hunkpapa Sioux and member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Frank walked on to the spirit world peacefully on May 26, 2024.
Frank grew up in Little Oak Creek near Little Eagle, SD on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, he was the eighth oldest of eleven siblings. He had five sisters, Tresita, Almira, Arlene, Patricia and Henrietta and five brothers, Orlando, Elfredo, Terrance, William and Henry Jr. He also had many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He very much enjoyed hanging out with them and will be especially missed by Henry III, Joey and Dom Red Legs. Family was very important to Frank and he will be fondly remembered for the lasting impact he had on our lives.
In his early years, Frank attended Little Eagle Day School and attended McLaughlin High School where he graduated in 1982. He also attended United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, ND and earned a certificate in Carpentry and he also attended Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates, ND. When he was younger, he loved hitting the powwow trail and could often be found working on his Grass dancer regalia. His Lakota name was Wicahpi Hoksila, meaning Star Boy, a name given to him by his Aunt Geraldine Jamerson. During his time in school, Frank also enjoyed playing basketball, a pastime he enjoyed into adulthood. Frank was also a huge fan of the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Cowboys. He always made time to relax and watch the games with family and friends.
Frank was a wonderful source of humor, kindness and reliability. He was someone you could always count on to help, even if it was to lighten the mood with a joke or help you figure out an issue with your vehicle. Frank was also a caring son who loved his mother and father. He was a helpful brother and a fun uncle, always cracking jokes and laughing with his loved ones and friends.
Frank is survived by his sisters, Almira Gerry (Fort Yates, ND), Arlene Loafer (McLaughlin, SD), and his brother Henry Red Legs Jr. (Little Eagle, SD). In addition to this, he has many grandchildren, nieces and nephews that will miss his joyful presence in their lives.
As Frank begins his journey to the spirit world, he is reunited with his beloved family members and ancestors who have gone before him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Red Legs Sr., and Magdaline (Red Door) Red Legs; sisters Tresita (Red Legs) Wilson, Patricia (Red Legs) Dedman, Henrietta Red Legs, Orlando Red Legs, Elfredo Red Legs, Terrance Red Legs and William Red Legs; and Grandparents Lala Ben and Unci Julia (Looking Horse) Red Legs, Lala Eli and Unci Mary (Black Tongue) Red Door. Together, they walk the sacred path in the afterlife, surrounded by love and light.
