Obituary

Funeral services for Francis "Fritz" Simons, age 89 of Selby will be 10:30 AM Saturday, February 1, 2014 St. John's Lutheran Church of Selby. Visitation will be Friday, January 31, 2014 at 5:00 PM with family prayer service and Masonic Rites at 7:00 PM at the Church. Burial will be in the Selby Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Fritz passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Francis (Fritz) L. Simons was born on June 8, 1924 in Timber Lake, SD to John H. and Margaret (Johnson) Simons. At age 6, Fritz was stricken with polio and spent time in Sioux Falls at a polio hospital. At age 10, he and his family moved to Selby. He graduated from Selby High School in 1943. After high school he went out to Portland, Oregon to work in the shipyards. The city life was not for him so he headed back to Selby. Fritz and his brother Lester ran the Super Valu until 1946 when they sold out to the Hettich Brothers. Fritz married Virginia Molstad on May 8, 1950. They made their first home in the newly built Berens Hotel which Fritz managed until 1957. During that time he started his own insurance agency, Simons Insurance eventually selling the business to Emil Brockel. He started his career with Aflac in 1969, eventually becoming a regional sales coordinator. He retired with over 25 years with the Aflac organization. He continued answering the phone and greeting customers at Simons Insurance until his death. Fritz and Virgie enjoyed attending all of their grand childrens activities.

Fritz was a member of: the Selby Community Club, Charter member of the Selby Community Golf Club, St. Johns Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was also very active with the Selby Jaycees during their glory years. He served 10 years as a Walworth County Commissioner.

Fritz is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia of Selby, two sons, Rod (Bev) Simons of Glenham and Scott (Desi) Simons of Selby, three grandchildren, Mandy (Nick) Bild of Weston, Florida, Austin (Susie) Simons of Mobridge, SD, Parker Simons of Brookings, SD and one very special German Ludwig Horning of Hannerer, Germany, one brother, Lyle (Jo) Simons of Portland, Oregon and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Margaret, three brothers, Lestor, John (Buzz) and Kenneth Simons.
