A gift, a glorious gift received more than 58 years ago by the hands of God. This gift was Francis Michael born to us on September 4, 1952 weighing in at 11 pounds 4 ounces, a big husky lad but… something was amiss. What it was we did not know, his features were not like any of the other children. "A gift oh, so beautiful." (Ardrie E. Hermes, 1962) Frank was born in Isabel to David and Ardrie (Scott) Hermes. Frank lived with his parents in Firesteel until moving to the family homestead southwest of Timber Lake. At the age of ten Frank and his family moved into Timber Lake. Frank attended training schools in Sioux Falls and Hartford for a time before returning to Timber Lake for a few years. He moved into the LIVE Center in Lemmon in the early 1980's where he resided until his health started to fail. In August of 2010 he moved into the Selby Good Samaritan Center where he has since resided.
Frank was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church. He faithfully attended there and also St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. While in Lemmon Frank was known as the "Popcorn Guy" at the Bank West where he worked from 1994 to 2010 handing out popcorn. He also regularly attended sporting events in Lemmon especially if his nieces and nephews were playing. He enjoyed music whether it was singing and dancing or playing the harmonica and guitar. Frank liked his visits back to the farm where his nieces and nephews kept him busy. He was an avid WWE Wrestling fan, his favorite being John Cena. He also enjoyed watching Karate Kid. He had a very active lifestyle. Frank participated in some Special Olympics activities growing up. Frank was known as being full of hugs for the ladies, handshakes, and salutes to the guys.
