Obituary

Funeral services for Floyd High Hawk age 54 of Eagle Butte will be at 10 AM, Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte. Burial will be at the Frazier Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. An all night wake will start at 5 PM Monday with services at 7 PM at the church. Floyd passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Eagle Butte IHS.

Floyd A High Hawk, Su-Mani-Tu-'Taka gi, "Brown Wolf", was born on November 6, 1961 in Dallas, TX to Emerson and Laverna (Brown Wolf) High Hawk Sr. for the most part he grew up on the Cheyenne River Reservation where received his GED. He attending United Tribes Technical College and graduating with a degree in Carpentry. He also attended YACC and Big Foot Community College and earned a degree in auto mechanic. Following graduation, he joined the Kicking Horse Job Corp in Ronan, MT. He was an iron worker in Chicago for a time, and for the most part drove truck for many years after receiving his CDL.

Floyd spent most of his life in the Eagle Butte area. His passion was boxing. Floyd's amateur boxing career began in 1979. His largest accomplishments were when he made the USA national boxing team and when he became the National Indian Light heavy weight champion and being on the same boxing team as Virgil Hill. Special acknowledgment goes out to Ed Moore his boxing coach in the early 80's. He was a 4X Golden Glove champ three-time Silver champ and 3X Midwest region champ, and 2X AAU Champion. He was undefeated for five years in the Midwest region. He was known for his knockout punch which was a straight right. Dean Schrempp was one of his coaches during his boxing days, once said he could have gone pro. Floyds boxing name was "Pretty Boy" After his boxing days he would continue to give advice on boxing skills no matter how old or young you were. He was always seen shadow boxing till the end. When he was younger he rode bulls with the Chasing Hawk Family.

Floyd wanted to be remembered as a simple man and would be a friend with anyone. He liked to hang around his kolas. He tried his best with his kids. He was a member of the Minnicoujou Cultural Society. Floyd was also a direct decedent from the Wounded Knee massacre. When he would own a dog he would always name it "Pretty Boy".

Floyd is survived by five children, Misty LeClaire, Misty High Bear, Shotay Fast Horse, Floyd High Hawk Jr., Ramsey High Hawk, brothers and sisters, Humphrey (Madonna) of Rapid City, Emery of Dupree, Mike (Roxanne) of Rapid City, Nial and kids of Eagle Butte, Patsy of Dupree and Edith (Kevin) Finley of New Town, ND and 34 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Emerson High Hawk Sr. and Laverna Long, sister, Belen Long.
