Mass of Christian Burial for Florence Wittmeier, 95, of Herreid will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 15, 2026, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Herreid. Burial will be at the church cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service will be at 7 PM, Friday at the church. Florence passed away August 7, 2026, at Aspen Grove in Sturgis

Florence T. Wittmeier was born on October 20, 1930, the 3rd daughter of Joe and Mary E. Brandner, on a farm 3 and ½ miles north of Herreid, SD, where she grew up. Florence graduated from Herreid High School in 1948. She attended summer school at Northern State teachers’ college in Aberdeen, SD. She then taught for two years at the Monthye farm school. On July 11, 1950, she married Maynard E. Wittmeier at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Following their marriage, they made their home in Herreid, but Maynard was soon drafted for the Koren Conflict. Florence later followed him to Atascadero California to finish his deployment. They then returned to Herreid to live. They had four children; Connie, George, Duane, and Brian.

Florence was a teacher aid of the Herreid kindergarten for two years. She was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She served as a catechism teacher, member of the choir and a member of the Altar Society. Later the women formed a rosary club enjoying fellowship while making rosaries to be given to Catholics in need around the U.S. and internationally. She was also a member of the Herried Legion Auxiliary and Herried Senior Citizen Organization.

Florence was a great cook, and her family enjoyed many German dishes, but she was known for her “flakey” pie crust in her apple pie. Her husband preferred her sour cream raisin pie thoroughly. Florence and Maynard loved their grandkids and over summer vacation they would stay for two weeks enjoying fishing outings, swimming at the pool, and riding the four-wheeler. What impressed them the most was “everyone knew our names!”. Florence loved her 11 great-grandchildren who visited her often.

Florence considered herself blessed to have lived near her family. She had her brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and her parents in proximity. In 2020, she decided to move to Sturgis, SD, into the Aspen grove assisted living community to be near her youngest son Brian along with her niece Julie Seiler. Trigg was also only blocks away, as well as her sister Genevieve. She was residing nearby with her son Alan and Dorna Kightlinger. At Aspen Grove, Florence enjoyed the indoor activities of crafting, puzzling, bingo, movies, and Rummy cube. She always loved having visitors.

Florence is survived by two of her children Connie (Gary) Moser of Apple Valley, MN, and Brian (Beverly) Wittmeier of Sommerset, SD, seven grandchildren: Bruce (Jessica) Moser and their three children Wyatt, Shelby and Ty, Teresa (Patrick) Kelly and their son Samuel, Alan (Rebecca) Moser and their two children Conan and Remy, Greg (Kimberly) Wittmeier and their two children Gaven and Payton, Jeremy (Claire) Wittmeier and their son Calvin, Kristyn (Gunner) Hanzel and their two children Killian and Arden, Miles Wittmeier (son of George Wittmeier), her brother Walter (Maryanne) Brandner, and her sister-in-law Angie Brandner.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maynard (age 82 in 2006), her son Duane (1954 in infancy), her son George (age 68 in 2020), her father and mother Joe and Mary E. Brandner, her brothers Bert and Clem, and her sisters Genevieve Lois and Betty.
