Mass of Christian Burial for Flora Walking Elk, 62, of Kenel will be 11 AM, CT Monday, August 1, 2011 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fort Yates, ND. Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Rosary service will be Sunday at 6 PM at the church. Flora passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Med Center One in Bismarck, ND.
Flora Marie 'Bootsie' Walking Elk, was born to Philip 'Percy' and Florence 'Flossie' Halsey, of Fort Yates, ND on December 16, 1948. Flora was raised and attended school in Fort Yates with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She attended and received her Associates degree at Sitting Bull College. She started work with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in 1978; she worked 33 years for the WIC Program. She was well known as a hard worker, a much respected member of the community and above all a very good friend.
Flora had met the love of her life and best friend of 36 years Norman Walking Elk and they were married in 1984. Flora was an excellent mother to her 5 five children Woody, Melissa, David, Colette, and Joseph and 11 grandchildren, Katelynn, Jeni, Alex, Kiefer, Kelsey, Philip, Taylor, Woody IV, Halsey, Jake, and Sydalee. She is also survived by her twin sister Cora (Joe) Miner of Eagle Butte, SD, sister Laura (Dewey) Austin of Aberdeen SD, and brothers Thomas Halsey of Fort Yates, ND, Joseph Halsey of Dallas, TX, Her nephews Thomas DeLong, Chuck Miner, Christopher S. Miner, and Casey Miner. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband Norman, her brothers Philip 'Cowboy', Larry, nephew Richard, and her very special niece Lee Marie Halsey.
