Funeral services for Eugene Miller, 81, of Isabel, SD, are 11AM-MT, Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at the Isabel Community Building. Burial at Hillview Cemetery in Isabel under the direction of the Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Visitation is 6-7PM-MT, with a prayer service at 7PM, Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at the United Church of Christ of Isabel. Eugene passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016, at his home in Isabel.
Eugene was born to Jake and Gladys Miller on September 9, 1934, in the Firesteel area. Four years later the family moved to the Isabel area where Eugene attended school through the 8th grade. He met Phyllis Caroline Dearborn and the two were married on December 20, 1952, at the congregational church in Isabel. They lived north of Firesteel where Eugene worked for Ralph Petersen doing farm work. He also ran a trap line in the winter. They then moved south of Walker to the Otto Hoyer Ranch. Eugene worked for Otto and Gus Miller in construction. He purchased the Harry Dearborn farm 11 miles north of Isabel. He taught heavy equipment classes in Eagle Butte. Gene was busy doing construction work in the area, building dams and dug outs for the local ranchers in the summertime and expanding his own ranching operations. He purchased the Tommy Johnson ranch, 9 miles north of Isabel, next to Hwy 65. This is where he resided until his retirement. After his retirement he moved to Isabel, where he lived the remainder of his life.
He had many accomplishments in his life. He worked for more than 50 years in the construction industry. He also served on the board of directors for a bank for 18 years. He was a board member and director for the LICA for many years and a member of the AGC for several years. He was one of the founding board members for the Isabel Development Corp. and held many other positions such as township boards, etc.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Phyllis Miller of Isabel; his children, Loren (Coleen) Miller of Gillette, WY, Jerome (Nancy) Miller of Isabel, Marlene (Shannon) Stewart of Eaton, CO, and Jim (Jody) Miller of Isabel; other family members include Debbie Hill of Lemmon, SD, Kenny (Joan) Wanke of Gillette, Mick Frank of Isabel, Duane Miller of AZ, Shirley Miller of Rapid City, SD, Karen (Jerry) Wanke of Gillette, Connie (Walt) Miller of Ft. Collins, CO; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Gladys Miller; his brother, Alvin Miller; his brother-in-law, Clarence (Alvina) Dearborn; his sister-in-law, Jessie (Roger Young and Bob Dreis); and sister-in-law, Faith (Jack) Reich.
