Etta Florence Homelvig Keller was born on July 18, 1926 to Sigwart and Eliza Homelvig. She grew up on the family farm west of Amidon, North Dakota, attended rural grade schools in the Amidon area and graduated from New England High School. After high school she moved to Bismarck, North Dakota and it was there she met Ed Keller, the man who stole her heart. They married in 1946 and started their life together in Bismarck where Ed was working as a professional musician. They moved to their farm north of Glencross, South Dakota in 1948, raised 10 children and lived a happy busy life together. After Ed's death in 1983, Etta continued to live on the farm doing what she always did, caring for others.
Etta lived a life full of purpose and joy. Etta is known for her abundant vegetable gardens and glorious flower beds. She had a gift and a love for growing all things beautiful. Her children recall the never ending supply of cookies, pies, cakes, rolls and homemade bread in her kitchen and canned goods in her pantry. Etta loved to sew and from the whir of her sewing machine came dresses, shirts, doll clothes, patched jeans, stuffed toys, quilts, and curtains. Her hands were never idle and she would spend her free time embroidering; many of these pieces were given to others as gifts. Her enthusiasm for life and her overflowing energy were amazing. Her most precious gifts in life were her children and grandchildren.
Etta is survived by her ten children, Cindy (Bill) McGinnis, Becky (Rick) Brownlee, Kathy (Mark Henry) Andersen, Laura (Gene) Keller, Nancy Keller, Doug Keller, Dan (Lisa) Keller, Dennis Keller, Marilyn (Keith) Scott, and Paulette Keller, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, two brothers Cliffton Homelvig and Glen Homelvig, one sister Shirley Kitzan, one brother-in-law Peter Keller, three sisters-in-law, Fauneil Keller, Delila Keller, Kathleen Keller and one brother-in-law, Dallas Zimmerman.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edmund, her parents Sig and Eliza Homelvig, her sisters Ruth Kubista and Margie Bohnhoff, brother Earl Homelvig and two infant brothers and many brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law
Etta touched the hearts and lives of many and her loving, caring spirit will remain with us forever.
