Funeral services for Etta Taken Alive, 88, of McLaughlin, will be at 11 AM CT, Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in McLaughlin. Burial will be in the Good Shepherd Church Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be from 5-6 with a prayer service at 6 PM CT Friday. Etta passed away, Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.
Etta Taken Alive was born in March 20, 1922 to Antone and Josephine (Looking Elk) Whiteman. She along with three sisters and one brother were all born and raised in the Little Eagle area. Siblings are now all deceased. She attended the Little Eagle Day School and later Wakpala Mission School through the 8th grade. She married Jess Taken Alive and together they had two sons, Peter and Arnold Taken Alive (both deceased) and one daughter, Mary Lou Taken Alive (deceased). She has been widowed for over 40 years and never remarried. She is the proud grandmother to 8 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
She worked in the Little Eagle School system as a kitchen aide and also in the Ft. Yates Old Age manor where she worked as an aide. Etta is of the Episcopal faith and was known to attend most area Pow Wows and loved to listen to Lakota music. She also enjoyed doing bead work and spending time with her grandchildren. The last few years she lived at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.
Etta is survived by grandchildren; Peter Taken Alive, Leonard Village Center, Dorothy Village Center, Alex and Geraldine Looking Elk, Fern Has Horns, Mary Ann Has Horns, Inez Eagle Shield, Linda Breuer, Eunice Archambault, Sidney Eagle Shield, Jr., Daniel Has Horns, Joe White Mountain, Sr., and the Mountain Family of North Dakota.
Casketbearers are Richard Long Feather, Joe White Mountain, Jr., Craig Eagle Shield, Russell Has Horns, Dondi Frazer, William Yellow Earrings.
Honorary Bearers will be John Red Bear, Pauline Eagle Chasing, Adele Little Dog, Episcopal Lay Readers, Delores Taken Alive, Imogene Taken Alive, Mazie Shelton, Isabel Uses Arrow, Evelyn Uses Arrow, Trista Weasel, Gladys White Shield, Fern Lutz, Maryann White, Fern Has Horns, Eunice Archambault, Magdeline Long Feather, Helen Pipe, Kathy Vallee, and All Her Grandchildren
