Obituary

Ethel Jane Ochsner, 82 formerly of Herreid, SD passed away Monday February 14th, 2022 in Fort Collins, CO.
Ethel was born June 5th, 1939 in Herreid, SD to Jacob G. Hofer and Pauline (Bickel) Hofer. She attended grade school at Sterling District Rural Farm School, graduating from Herreid High School in 1957 and attended South Dakota State University in Brookings from 1957 to 1959. She married Vern Ochsner on June 30th, 1959 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid, SD. They made their home on a farm ten miles northeast of Herreid, SD.
Ethel was an active member in the Herreid Jaycees from 1961 to 1971 and held various offices. She served on the Campbell County Clinic Board. In addition, she was a volunteer for the Campbell County Cancer Unit and became a memorial chairman. Ethel was also a member of the Herreid Senior Citizens and active in the Centennial and All School Reunion committees. She taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years at the Reformed Church and belonged to the Women's Society holding various offices while being a member.
Her hobbies were gardening, raising flowers, sewing, quilting, crocheting and refinishing old furniture. Ethel was grateful for spending 61 years with her husband Vern. Her children, Jodie and husband Jeffery Holm of Denison, IA, Shirley and husband David Dalueg of New Ulm, NM, Keith Ochsner of Phoenix AZ, Steven and wife Barbara Ochsner of Fort Collins, CO. Eight grandchildren: Jessmyn and Joshua Holm of Denison, IA, Brooke (Justin) Dauer and Megan Dalueg of New Ulm, MN, Samuel and Kate Ochsner of Phoenix AZ, Alexander and Allison Ochsner of Fort Collins, CO. She enjoyed her grandchildren very much while sharing her talents with them. They all enjoyed her chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed cooking and baking as long as someone was there to help eat and no one ever left her table hungry.
Ethel is survived by her sister Mavis Klaudt and brother in law Gordon Klaudt, and sister in law; Gladys Giedd. She was preceded in death by her husband Vern Ochsner; her parents; Jacob and Pauline (Bickel) Hofer; in laws; Martha & Alvin Berreth, Ruben & Verna Ochsner, Peter & Renata Ochsner, Esther & Rupert Mehlhaff, Lenora & Owen Schulz,  Oscar & Delores Ochsner, Roger Giedd, Marcus Ochsner, and Carl & Marlena Ochsner-Weber.
They retired from farming in 2002 and did some traveling. They especially enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, visiting international countries and spending their winters in Arizona.
On Saturday February 26th, 2022 a visitation will be held at 10:00 AM at the First Reformed Church in Herreid, SD. A funeral service with the Rev. Cody Schwichtenberg officiating at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Herreid, SD. after the service with refreshments to follow. Services are under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Memorial donations may be made in Ethel Ochsner's name to an organization of the donor's choice.
