Funeral services, Esther Silk, age 90, Kenel will be 2:00 PM,CT, Saturday, May 5, 2012, Catholic Church of Assumption, Kenel, SD. Burial, Assumption Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation Friday 10:00 AM till 3:00 PM at Kesling Funeral Home. A Procession meet a mile south of Kenel 4 PM Friday. All night wake 5:00 PM at the church. Esther passed away, April 27, 2012 at Mobridge Regional Hospital, Mobridge, SD.
Esther was born on April 5, 1922 to George Left Hand and Mary Jane Poitra at Old Kenel, SD. She was the second child of twelve children, four boys and eight girls. She spent her school days attending the Fort Yates Boarding School and Marty Mission Boarding School. She had four children: Thomas Baker Sr., Claudine Bullhead, Antoinette Johnson and Laudine Bullhead, the twin sister of Claudine who passed away at birth. Esther was married to Bud Silk for about five years. They lived in Minnesota for some time before moving back to South Dakota.
Esther was well known for her bread making and was an excellent cook, seamstress and quilt maker. Her first project as a small girl was a baby blanket for her sister. Esther wasn't afraid to use her shoes for walking, as she traveled many places.
She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She is survived by her two children, Thomas Baker Sr. and Claudine Bullhead, four sisters, Elaine St. John of Kenel, Rose Ann Boyde of Poplar, MT, Shirley Poitra and Germaine Demery of Kenel, one brother, Clayton Left Hand of Kenel, 28 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, three brothers, and three sisters.
