Ernest "Ernie" Milo Fjeldheim was born on January 24, 1937, the 6 th of 11 children, to Andrew and Arlouine (Freeman) Fjeldheim at the family homestead NE of Pollock, SD. There he attended the Solomonson country school and grew to young manhood. Ernie continued his education at the Pollock School. He then moved to Mobridge where he studied for and received his GED.
Ernie was part of the South Dakota National Guard, Mobridge Unit 2 nd PLT, 211 th Engineering CO, from 1963 to 1969. He trained in Ft. Leonard Wood and was on call for deployment to Vietnam.
Ernie then purchased the former Karl Goehring farm, southeast of Mound City, where he farmed and raised cattle.
In the fall of 1986, Ernie ran for Campbell County Sheriff. He was successful and served the residents of this county proudly from 1987-2003, when he retired. Ernie enjoyed his job, his co-workers and friends. While in the field of public service, he gave himself entirely to the work.
Ernie was also a member of the Jaycee's and the Eureka American Legion. He enjoyed watching sporting events, especially football. Ernie also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sportsmen's trip to Washington state being the most memorable for him. He also looked forward to coffee with friends and watching Friday sales at Herreid Livestock.
In the spring of 2019, Ernie became a resident of the Good Samaritan Assisted Living Center in Herreid. He was still active in his farming and ranching operation and enjoyed frequent trips to his farm to check on things and to spend time with his dog. Workers and residents alike enjoyed having Ernie at the facility.
Having no children of his own, he held his many nieces and nephews and their children, near and dear. Ernie also had two very loved and loyal dogs that were his companions for many years. Denver, a Samoyed and Cody, an American Eskimo. Where Ernie was, so was his dog.
He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Ernie is survived by his dog, Cody, siblings, Evelyn Quenzer, Deadwood, Earl Fjeldheim, Selby, Andrew (Cindy) Fjeldheim Jr., Pollock, Alvin (Bernadette) Fjeldheim, Pollock; sisters-in-law, Rita Fjeldheim, Herreid, Phyllis Fjeldheim, Pollock, Gladys Fjeldheim, Herreid, and Holly Fjeldheim, Herreid, along with many nieces and nephews.
