Ellery Gordon Brockel passed away on Monday, September 6th at Mobridge Regional Hospital. He was 95. Ellery was born August 31, 1926 in Mound City, SD to Louise (Dupper) and John Brockel. He was an only child.
Ellery was raised on his parent's farm nine miles northwest of Glenham. He served in the army as a Sergeant receiving his honorable discharge November 30, 1946 and received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal (Japan).
Ellery met his wife Patricia (Gene McFarland) in Mobridge, SD. They were married March 21, 1947. They lived on the family farm next door to Ellery's parents where they raised their four children, Lynn (Joan) Brockel of Glenham, Lory (Ann) Brockel of Durham, CA, Eugene (Nancy) Brockel of Mobridge and Bridget (Danny) Hicks, Sr. of Minneapolis, MN. He farmed and ranched up until his early 80's on the family farm. He will be remembered by his grandchildren and others in the community for carrying on the tradition of baking cookies as his wife did for them.
Ellery was preceded in death by his parents, wife, granddaughter, Michelle Brockel and step-grandson, Jesse Sanderson. Ellery has 5 grandchildren, Adia Hicks, Brett Brockel, Brad Brockel, Jeannine Heil, Denene Wilson; 5 step-grandchildren Danny Hicks, Jr., Nate, Tony, Chris Sanderson and Alana Winterberg, several great grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren.
Due to the ongoing concern around Covid they family will have a private burial service at a later date.
