Bachman was born May 14, 1922 to William and Lydia (Walth) Ehly on a farm southwest of Isabel, SD. She grew up and graduated in 1940 from Isabel High School. She then went to work in Timber Lake at the Nya and for the Scherer family.
In 1942, Ella attended Southern Normal College in Springfield, SD to become a teacher. After a year of college, she taught at the Warner School south of Firesteel for one year and then moved on to teach in the Firesteel elementary school.
Ella married Albert Bachman on March 4, 1945. Their first home was the Parker place and a few years later they bought the Julius Bertsch farm S.E. of Isabel, where they farmed. Two children were born, John William (1947) and Betty Ann (1948).
In the late 40's they purchased the Kern store and moved to Firesteel. The home they bought was moved from Trail City to Firesteel where they lived until 1955. Albert worked at the store while Ella went back to teaching. In 1950, a son, Benjamin Albert was born.
In 1955 their home was again moved, this time to Isabel. Ella taught 7 & 8th grades in the Isabel school system for 25 years. She received her degree from NSU in 1971 where she attended during several summer school sessions.
In 1980, Ella retired from teaching to spend time with Albert who had also retired. They made many trips to their kids to watch their grandkids in activities.
Ella and Albert traveled to many places where they enjoyed the sights of the world and took mountains of pictures.
Ella's health started to fail around 2010 and she eventually moved to Martin to live with Betty Ann. She then moved to Pierre to an assisted living. She then moved back to Martin and lived in the Bennett County Nursing Home for the past four years where she peacefully passed away on September 16, 2017.
Ella's proudest moments in her life were teaching and helping mold the minds of young people. God blessed her with the abilities to teach and all the ones she reached will remember her and of fond memories of Mrs. Bachman.
