Mass of Christian Burial for Elizabeth L. "Betty" High Eagle Shortman age 76 of Wakpala will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 5, 2013 at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Wakpala. Burial in the St. Bede's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer services at 7 PM at Kesling Funeral Home. Elizabeth passed away Wednesday August 28, 2013 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND.

Elizabeth was born on May 12, 1937 at Fort Yates to Robert and Rose (Yellow) High Eagle. She grew up on a ranch north of Wakpala in her younger years. She attended Fort Yates High School and graduated there, after high school she went on relocation to Los Angles, CA., where she met and married Joseph Shortman, and to this union a son was born Joseph Shortman, Jr. In 1962 she moved back to Standing Rock and met Geral Brown and to this union she had April, Gerald and Tracy. Also raising a granddaughter Savannah.

She was employed a the Mobridge Care Center for awhile, later she moved to Wakpala to raise her family and was a homemaker. She then left Wakpala and attended United Tribes Tech College, after graduating from United Tribes she moved to Pierre, and on to Aberdeen for a short time, then relocated to Minneapolis, MN. After she left Minneapolis she then moved to Bismarck, ND and spent the remainder of her time in North Dakota until she left to the Spirit World.

Betty Lou was a very calm and private person with a very good sense of humor to those that knew her. She was always laughing and joking around with the people that were close to her. She will be greatly missed by her family, especially her granddaughter Savannah, whom she was very close.

She is survived by her daughter, April, of Denver, CO, two sons; Gerald (Jerry) of Fargo, ND, Tracy (Amelia) of Bismarck, ND, grandchildren Savannah of Bismarck, ND, Joseph (Dawn) Shortman III of Hopewell, VA, Jorena Shortman of Wakpala, SD, Hope and Alyssa Badten of Sleepyeye, MN.
