Mass of Christian Burial for Elaine A. Scherer, age 87, of Aberdeen will be at 10 AM MT, Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake. Burial will be at the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service will be held at 7 PM at the church on Sunday. Elaine passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at the Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Building Fund.
Elaine A. Scherer was born on April 6, 1924 to Nick and Mary L. (Gormally) Scherer at the family homestead in Corson County. She grew up in the Timber Lake area and attended Catholic School in Timber Lake. She graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1941. Following graduation she went to St. Luke's for nurses training in Aberdeen. She worked in Aberdeen for a time before moving to San Francisco where she worked as a nurse at a hospital until 1951. She then moved back to Aberdeen and worked as a school nurse at Northern State College. She also obtained her Bachelors Degree in nursing. She became an honorary member of the Newman Society in 1953. She returned to California and worked as a school nurse until 1964. She received her master's degree in Nursing at this time.
Elaine then moved to Mobridge where she was Director of Nursing at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. In 1968 She moved back to Aberdeen and taught nursing at Presentation College until 1971 when she moved to California and worked as a school nurse. Elaine retired from nursing in 1990. She worked as a receptionist at St. Norbert's Parish until 1997 before retiring from there. In 2001 she returned to South Dakota and has since resided at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Elaine loved music especially barber shop music. She was a member of AA for many years and was very involved in her church and the Red Cross. She was a tireless volunteer at women's shelters, AA groups and her churches. A highlight in her life was her trip to Rome in 1992 to see her nephew, Fr. Steve Biegler become ordained as a Deacon.
She is survived by two sisters, Mary (Alfred) Biegler of Timber Lake and Jo Ann Sepper of Fox Lake, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Wilhamine and Lucille.
